I am restoring a 1976 Honda cb550 motorcycle and got the engine running just fine in neutral with adequate fuel flowing into a clean carburator.

The problem is that when I shift into 1st or even 2nd and let the clutch out, then engine stalls and dies, even when I provide sufficient throttle and I can move a little (power going to the back tire) and even at high RPMs. I don't think this model bike has a kickstand kill switch that might be off, but I could be wrong.....

ANY INSIGHT or HELP anybody could provide would be greatly appreciated, because I am at the end of my limited wits with this one and I just want to ride.

Check to make sure the clutch is adjusted correctly but its most likely a fueling problem. How did you clean out the carbs?

It could be a fuel or clutch problem...I notice the clutch lever is a little tough to pull, and even though I adjusted it as in the manual, it could be a worn cable. It be nice if it was just that....

As for the carbs, I used a cb550 carb rebuild kit and canned air, there was very little gunk in there in the first place, but the valves are clear, I replaced the fuel lines and the floats are adjusted as such in the manual....

The other thing I didn't mention is that my fuel light comes on regular and I also have difficulty keeping my new battery charged if that helps any.
