hey guys i have the choice of a jdm b16a or a b18a1 to put in my 93civic cx. what would be faster do you guys think? the b18a1 has a mild "race" head on it but i have always been a believer in v-tec. whats your opinions

before everyone comes in and smashes you about searching im am going to give you my op.
I would go with the LS. and you will wax stock b16 all day long. The LS has more torque and will jump on a B16.
I had an LS w/ b16 tranny in my CX hatch and was never beat by a B16. Every B16 that i ran i beat by atleast 2 car.
but thats just me.

what are your plans for the car? the LS would be nice if you ever want to boost whereas the b16 would be better for all motor.. or boost depending. I have a JDM B16 in my 93 coupe and it smokes all my buddies ls hatches and gsr teggy's. The torque of an ls is nice though.

an ls will NOT wax a b16 all day... ever. a ls with b16 tranny ok close. a b16 and b16 tranny vs ls w/ ls tranny is a wrap. ide go b16 if its the whole swap with tranny good base to work off of.

Seeing as how you're in california, get something thats at least as the car its going into to pass smog, i'm assuming based on your name its going in a '93. If it were me i'd take a B16A over a '90 - '91 B18A1, but i'd probably take a '92 - '93 B18A1 or B18B1 with B16 tranny over a B16.

Yeah, the '92 and '93s are OBD1, but from my understanding the engine must be the same year or newer than the vehicle its going into. That still leaves the '93 B18A1, but thats it.

If the LS comes with an LS trans and B16 comes with a B16 trans then B16 HANDS DOWN.
If u can get the LS w/ b16 trans:
b16 has less tq of course (116 vs 127...11 ft.lbs) and the LS will make more power until about 6k, but after that the b16 eats it (160 or 170hp vs 145hp).
If you are drag racing I would go for the B16 cause u will be above 6k more than 90% of the time... better flowing head... even better gas mileage w/ vtec and smaller motor
If you are planing on tracking the car an LS would be a good choice with the B16 trans... Tq is a good thing to have here... but still it would be close (for me anyways)

I know! It gots like 10 lb-ft more torx! Wax 'em all day!
You make a B18A1 sound like a LS1.

Ah ha! There's the truth!
@ OP: You didn't say, but I'll assume you want a comparison between an OBD1 B16A and an OBD1 B18A1.
OBD1 B16A: 168 hp/116 lb-ft. Has a very broad, flat torque band. One of a few 4-cylinder engines that increases hp+torque above 7000 rpm. Low rpm power suffers making it's 1.6L displacement obvious.
OBD1 B18A1: 140 hp/126 lb-ft. Makes hp+torque in a more conventional manner, within conventional rpms. Torque production peaks more rapidly, giving better lower rpm "pull".
From my experience, the B16A is just a bit quicker than the B18A1 or even a B18B. It's not WAY faster (and it's not w@X it y0 faster), just a little bit quicker.
I've never driven/been in a car with a B18A/B w/ a B16 tranny, but I don't doubt it can take a B16A.
I love the B16A, but I think I want a B18B w/ my Y21 tranny for my next street driven project car.

OP didn't mention anything about LS/Vs or building a motor whatsoever.

your .7 difference showed up there can really be driver. and the tires they used.
personally i think they both are good choices. it just comes down to preference, and plans. the B16 may be smaller but by .2 liters. not that much smaller then the B18. I like the rev of the b16, and the sound of the vtec when it kicks in. and is reliable to around 300 hp turbo. i think the ls can handle close to the same amount turbo.
the ls does have a weaker sleeve on it. but a longer stroke which turbos seem to like.

*** dat an ls has torque over the jdm b16 but i got one in my crx and no b18 will get a great jump on me maybe half a car if they get lucky but once my v-tech kicks in its a wrap bye bye ls they have no chance but on the other hand ls's are the best for boost but with out boost get the jdm b16 all the way thats my opinion i speak from experience but its your choice have fun and good luck
I WOULD NOT GO H SERIES CUZ ITS 80 MORE POUNDS ON YOUR CAR SO YOUR GOING TO NEED SUSPENTION AND ITS ALOT OF MONEY 4 NT TO WHAT RUN 13S NA. B18A1,B18B1 IS GOOD FOR BOOST OR ALL MOTOR. I WOULD GO WITH A B20Z IF YOUR GOING BOOST A NICE TUNE AND YOULL BE GOOD. MY BOY RAN 11.6 IN A DC BOOSTED B20 15 PSI AND THE MOTOR IS STILL RUNING AFTER 2 YEARS SO JUST DO YOU RESEARCH MAN AND DO WHAT YOU WANT.
