Default how do i know endlinks are worn?

im tightening my suspension to like new with new bushings, shocks, etc...my question is for the em1, how do i know if the F/R endlinks are worn, they don't have bushings, they use that ball joint type method, how would i know by looking at them?
also to renew suspension, anything besides the following:

-tie rods
-bushings
-shocks

You will know they are worn when your car begins to make funny clunking noises and you cant figure out what it is. My car had been making these weird noises, and after changing 3 sets of bushings/balljoints with no success, i decided to check the end link and it was gone!
