I rode this morning in 38-degree weather...OMFG I hated all 3 miles of it.
If we didn't have a couple 60+ degree weekends coming up, I would put my bike away right now...Minnesota winters are LONG (I'm talking late April before all the salt washes off)!
How long will you hold out before you put your bike away? This obviously applies only to those who can't ride all year long.

I ride year round unless there is too much snow on the roads. Although 20deg riding isn't as great at 70deg riding, you just gotta wear layers and you'll be fine. Also it's hard to find anyone who wants to go riding through the mountains in the dead of winter... which makes for many solo rides
Its all about the layers. Insualted textile stuff works best, insulated gloves make a huge difference. I also wear a skiing muffler, keeps your neck warm. In portland we don't get much snow, but lots of rain and wind. Some days I'll ride in the rain somedays not, just depends on how I'm feeling. I don't ride as much as do in the summer though. 38 F is a bit chilly. Its also about as low of a tempeture as I ride in, I don't want to hit a patch of ice.
I agree it is all in the gear. I have some windproof pants and jacket and it is all good in 30 deg weather.... I hear you on long winters.... I am not looking for the snow in WI this year.

Sunday night I drove an hour in freezing weather, my legs froze because I was only wearing jeans. Luckily Monday morning the ride back was warm. It's been rainy here for a while but I still have my bike on campus. I'll have it here for at least this weekend.

+1
Although my morning commute (6:30am) has been getting a bit cold. I think I'm gonna pick up a balaclava from Aerostitch. I think I'll be good after that.

I just got my baclava(sp?) and glove liners in the mail from newenough. I'll probably order some DL650 handguards and heated grips. I might have to cut up the handguards to work with my bar end mirrors, and I'm leaning towards Hotgrips brand heated grips.
For years now I've strongly considered moving to Arizona. Especially after last winter, which was the most brutal winter I've ever lived through in Minnesota.
I'll have to see how long I can tolerate riding in the cold, before I put the bike away.

When you live in the N.W. you learn to deal with the cold and the rain, or you
don't get to ride. I only drive if there is possibilities of black ice, rode my vfr700f2
home from work on 2 inches of snow once.

I ride year round.
Usually too hot is the problem rather than too cold with my bike. If I get cold I just bring my legs closer to the transmission box and engine block. That heats me up pretty well.

I will probably stop when the salt starts being put all over our roads
I rode all year round with my supermoto but now I've got a shiny sports bike I really don't wanna get it all salty.

+1 for the salt issue ending the riding season here. That crap destroys vehicles. Last year I was commuting up untill Thanksgiving. I rode once in December to get some stabilizer in my lines. When it takes longer to gear up for the ride than it actually takes to get to your destination it's not really worth it anymore.
I have heated grips... I'll ride until they salt the roads. As far as riding in the elements.. I hate it... Its not fun to go fast when your constantly worried about stuff not to mention uncomfortable with a million things on your mond.

It's too bad there aren't any curves around.
