worn dog teeth, but decent synchros, and loose, vibrating noise when highway cruising
so basically i have one f'ed up gsr trans.
i've owned it for around 3 years and put probably around 20k miles on it and ever since i put a quaife lsd in it two years ago, ive been having problems.
around 400 miles and a dyno tune after the lsd was installed, it started making a noise on the highway like something was coming loose and vibrating in the trans. this happened about 250 miles from my house, but i just kept driving home. since then it has always made the noise, even after i took the trans apart to replace the diff bearings and make sure the correct shim was installed(which it was). so i've just put up with it and it hasnt ever gotten worse. this only happens when cruising lightly on the throttle, if i accelerate in fifth, the noise will go away. but if i am decelerating the noise will be there until a certain speed.
recently at the track i was having MAJOR issues getting into second. this was on 24.5" slicks and spinning and bouncing the limiter in first and then shifting to second. or trying to. it usually just grinds and locks me out of the gear, unless i wait a second and slowly shift. once this started happening i was also having problems with second gear popping out during my burnout and not even letting me put it in second.
so now i tear the trans apart again and inspect the synchros. they look slightly worn, but nowhere near as much as the dog teeth. the dog teeth are remarkably more worn than the sychros.
so my questions are:
-is there anyway my dog teeth can be worn more than my sychros, unless someone put new synchros in the trans before me?
-is there a certain bearing causing my highway noise?
-could these problems be linked?
i'll post up some pics tomorrow.

The teeth on the rings don't really wear. It's the inside of the ring that wears (i.e the "brake pad").
If you have worn dog teeth, then this is usually the culprit and would need to change your rings.
Check the clearance between the bottom of the ring and the gear face to make sure it is within spec.
