Rock Crawler drivetrain help.
I know this is not what you guys normally talk about.
But I was hoping in can use a little of your expertise. I mostly build Jeeps and Rock Crawlers nothing against compact sports I just don't have enough time/money for every hobby, and I enjoy four wheeling over speed.
My next rock crawler I want to use a
4cly front wheel drive engine with an automatic transmission that I can put a spool in.
I will install the engine sideways and send the drive axles to the front and rear axle.
I will keep it naturally aspirated, basically as simple as possible.
I saw Richmond Makes spools for Integras, are they for all 3rd Gen Integra transmissions automatic and standard, do they use this transmission in other vehicles?
I would like to stay with popular components, easier to get parts and more aftermarket components etc.
So my question is what would be a good donor vehicle and what to stay away from.
I obviously will be removing the engine, drive train and electronics so I don't care what car it comes from.
Do they make aftermarket ECU to bypass emission etc.
I'm more interested in price and reliability then performance, you don't need much HP when your have 100 to 1 first gear ratio.
Thank you

Awesome. Welcome to honda-tech.
If you are looking at honda then there are a lot of options. They are all reliable. Look at the B18B engine from the base model 94-01. You can find one for pretty cheap. its a 1.8L, ~130hp. Or you can goto the 160hp B16A (1.6l). More expensive, a little harder to find, but lighter and more horsepower.
There is tons of aftermarket support for nearly every Honda motor, including engine management.
The transmission for all Integras 94-2001 are interchangable. The only other U.S. model that would use one though is the 99-2000 Civic Si, and maybe a CRV.
Come back with pictures no matter which engine you pick.

Are all 1.8L, B18B engines and 1.6L, B16A engines.
Lighter and more horsepower= really good.
I think Honda is the way to go. Between reliability, availability, and the amount of aftermarket components, I don't think anything else can match it.
I just wanted to hear someone else thinks the same way.
I'll start looking for wrecked 94-01 Integras or 99-2000 civic
Thank you,

Thank you,
The Honda automatic transmissions are pretty weak, honestly. They use main/counter shafts and clutch packs to engage the gears.
I'm sure there are companies making stronger internals, but I'm not sure of who.
Also, the diffs aren't compatible between the AT and MT- under a part # search....good luck!

No, there are other 1.8L's like the B18C1 and B18C5 that make much more power, but will cost twice or three times as much. (also integra engines)
There are also Dseries 1.6 liters (single cam, D16Ax), but they make way less torque, although dirt cheap, and very light.. These can be found in every year civic from 80's-2003 or so.
It sounds to me like the B18A might be best for your application.
