Default Tach not reading correctly *Searched*

All I could find in the archives was either tach jumping/misfire or After-market Tach problems.

My Tach in my 94 Prelude (Illuminated style) is off by approx. 1000Rpm's. Even when it is Key On Engine Off the tach still sits around 1100rpm. Same problem throughout the Rpm range.

My s300 reads correctly through the pcm so I am thinking I need a cluster. Just wanted to make sure there isnt another common problem before I buy a cluster.

Thanks!

any cel's? vss is my only guess too, take it off and manually spin it to see how that coordinates with ur tach. I did this on my car, but mine is not EL ( i think urs is by the illuminated style reference)

No Cel's

This isnt a speedometer problem, I thought the Tachometer was controlled by the Icm not the Vss.

Even then it still displays correctly on my labtop through Hondata

I'm not familiar with 4th gen gauges (which I thought were digital), but if it's a standard radial tach, you should be able to pull off the needle and put it on in the correct position. Kind of tricky to get it close, but I've changed mine around on the my ugly indiglo gauges on my 5th gen; needle just pops straight off.

ur cluster is messed up. its a common problem with the electro-luminescent gauges on the 4th gens (94-96 si/vtec) I've already gone thru 2 clusters.

My oem one was fine until about 4.5k rpms, then was off by at least 800rpm (happened on its own)

Then the JDM one i put in there (i know...ricer...) was fine for about 6 months, then it was off constantly by at least 1k rpms, and it would slowly accelerate when it got around 7k even tho it still pulled to around 7800.

Best thing to do it recognize that it is off, and just make your own adjustments in ur head....like if ur tach is reading 5k, know what ur rpms actually are.

Unless you got enough money to keep buyin clusters until they dont mess up. If you shake an EL cluster while its out of the car, its gonna be reading wrong.
