Default Car died suddenly... fuel pump?

I have a 91 civic ex sedan and I was driving it around town last night when it suddenly died on me. I have a half tank of gas in and I was sitting at a red light, when the light turned green I slowly started accelerating and it just felt like I was running out of gas. It started sputtering and losing power so I pulled off to the side of the road and it died completely.

I can turn the car over all i want but it just doesn't sound like its getting any gas at all. This leads me to believe that its my fuel pump. The only problem is, I live downtown and I don't have many of the tools from my parents house that I could use to make sure.

Anyone have any opinions on the matter? Does it sound like it may be something different? I replaced my fuel filter about 6000 miles ago so I don't think thats the problem. Anyone have a write up on replacing the fuel pump on these cars?

Pull the distributer cap and make sure the rotor is still attached.

If it were the main relay, what would the symptoms be?

I had a similar problem and thought it was the injectors but turned out to be the main relay.

I'd try swapping the relay out first

first check to see if u have spark. then unbolt the fuel line to the fuel filter and have sumone crank the engine. if the fuel pump is dead no fuel should be coming out of the lines

yeah i had the same problem once, check the fuel pump by takin off the fuel rail, thats what i did. then if that didnt work check to see if you got spark, which is easy to do. and if no spark, then Dizzy. ha

from my experiences a bad main relay will never shut off the car, just prevent it from restarting when hot.

pulling the cap takes 12 seconds, its worth a shot.

i dont think you need another person to see if you have fuel coming through the lines. i think once you turn the key to the second click the fuel pump should turn on and gas will start gushing everywhere. even though it may be better to have someone around just in case. lol.

it does sound like a distributor problem.

Yeah, our cars are well known for the screw holding in the rotor coming off.

Alright, I took off the distributor and checked the rotor but its on there firm. I took of the small rubber tube running to the top of the fuel pressure regulator and turned the car over... no fuel. Has to be the fuel pump

check on of the lines goign to the rail, the lines coming from the pressure regulator are a vaccum line and the fuel return.

That line is not for fuel, its a vaccum.

If you want to check for fuel, loosen one of the fuel lines at the fuel filter.

simple and easy way to figure it out ,pull the intake tube ,open the throttle body, splash a little bit of gas in it ,crank if it starts it's a fuel problem, if it doesn't pull a spark plug ground it to a bolt around the valve cover and get someone to crank ,if it sparks it's still a fuel problem if neither one change the main relay

Well it definately isn't the fuel pump. Pulled the banjo bolt on the fuel rail and cranked the car... plenty of gas. So I took out the main relay and some of the posts look a little dry. I was just going to run to autozone and pick up a new one but the "main relay" in their system doesn't look anything like the relay I pulled out (and I know I pulled out the right one).

when you put the key in the ignition and turn it you will see the check engine light come on and then shut off and that also happens at the same time the fuel pump comes on and shuts off also you hear a click thats the relay......now this has happened to me 2 times and both times it was the ingition control module you can test this if you have the information on how to do this also.. if you have a known good dizzy you can try it and i bet it will work ive see this before .... and would be a good idea to check some fuses hope this helps
