how to register a right hand drive..in cali
it is not just having the money to register it, but it is also who you know. You might have the money but if you don't have the source your still out of luck.

ollllddddd *** post but i'll add the info i have gained via searching and pestering george @ gspeed for info(thanks george!!!). this post is copied from another thread.
to DIY you'll need paper work that should come with the car from japan(de-reg and title....) probably a bill a sale you'll need reg forms REG 343(application for title or reg) and REG 256(statement of facts). On the reg256 form you fill in section C, title only and section G i.e. i (name) purchased this shell as parts from (blank) and have receipts for everything. reg 343 is filled by you and the dmv/chp.
Smog is the only grey area i have found but what i do know is you'll need a smog certificate, or try to reg as a diesel and be smog exempt (i've heard of it being done but don't know how). chp will need to inspect the car and it also needs a brake and light inspection. ummmmmm thats what i can think of off the top of my head

I don't even live in Cali, but it's a good guide to go by no matter what state you live in to try it. Figure if you can do it in Cali you can do it half as easily somewhere else haha

I bet it would be easy here, registration is the grey area.
i remember looking into this before and the total cost for an average ITR in japan plus shipping was $7000. you then have to get it off the docks and do the paperwork. this is where i stopped since, from what i could tell, there is a chance your car will get cut in half if you don't use a registered importer; which of course jacks the price up to around 10k
you then look around and notice that R33's aren't much more
