Default Speedometer says 80 but feels like I am drivng 65. Help.

What can be the cause of this? I have owned my 99 Integra GSR for about 2 years and I can tell how fast 80 should be. It feels so slow this morning. When I reach 95 MPH on speedometer then it feels like I am going 80.

What can be the cause of this?

Damn, how the hell do you know how fast your going lol.

Why don't you drive next to another GSR and see how fast hes going while your doing 80.

You know something is wrong when a soccer mom is moving faster than you when your speedometer is saying 80. lol.

Reviving an old thread, but does anybody know the solution to this problem? Is it the VSS? I have stock wheel diameter (stock rims) 195/55R15, no known dmg or tampering with VSS or cluster. At 80mph, it seems like im going 70-75mph... definitely not accurate. Any answers? Thanks in advance!

I have personal experience in this. Get or borrow an up to date GPS navigator. Then drive on a freeway/highway/countryside etc. at any legal speed while safely comparing the speed recorded on your GPS, and the speed your cluster says you're going. If there is a difference of 3mph or greater, then your speed is off.

My GSR says 70 and my gps says 65. Oh well, at least I am not speeding as much as I thought.

Nope.

It's not uncommon to have a difference of up to 5 mph, for various reasons. Just to cite one example, the difference in tire diameter (and in speedometer accuracy) between a new tire and one that is worn and ready for replacement is about 2 percent.

Use a GPS method (more accurate) or driving alongside a friend's car (less accurate) to find out just how far off you are. "Feels like" doesn't tell you squat about how far off you are.

seriously I LOL'd....

but anyways there might be 3 possibilities:

1) VSS gear worn out, might skip teeth that the vehicle is actually rolling..
2) speedometer speed needle need calibration ( If you swap any JDM cluster out that might screw up the setting)
3) extremely small tires / wheels combination

but I doubt the 2nd since you haven't touched anything on the cluster...

That accounts for about 5-6 MPH difference right there.

No, it doesn't. 205/50-15 is 1.6 percent smaller in diameter than the stock GS-R size of 195/55-15, so that is the percentage difference the tire size represents. You'd have to be going well over 300 miles per hour to account for a difference of 5-6 mph.

A difference of 1.6 percent means roughly 1 mph at typical highway speeds.

Damn, is that it? I could have sworn my car had a bigger difference when I dropped down to 205/50/15. I guess my speedometer is off by about 3-4 mph then cause I pass by several radar zones detectors display your speed and my speedometer shows I'm going about 4-5 mph faster than radar detecter when doing about 40-50 MPH.
