You all remove oil filter from the engine bay?
It looks like there is enough room to get at it, unscrew it and bring it up through the top of the engine. With another set of hands or a bunch of rags, it appears like it wouldn't make too much of a mess as long as you drain the oil for a couple hours. My GS-R (because of it's lower intake manifold) makes this impossible and I hated the hot oil running down my arm while under the car!
Do you all do it this way? I'll be changing the oil in the R tomorrow. Thanks.

Yes I change the oil filter from up top. I couldn't do it with my LS but the ITR's shorter intake manifold gives me just enough room to reach down there and twist it on/off as needed.

I've got a 1/2 gallon milk jug that I cut in half. I use it to cup the filter, unscrew filter and let it drop in. No mess.
I do mine from the bottom--maybe top would be easier?
get a oil filter relocation kit, makes oil changes very, very easy
I should also mention the K&N oil filter has a 1 inch nut welded to the end of it....makes it easier to loosen.

Not the greatest pic, but it gives part of an idea. I've always changed my filter from the top, but it hurts my fat (no, I mean muscular) arms and is very hard. I think I'm going to try from under next time. And with one of those milk jugs. Cool.
Do you guys remove the intake tubing and strut bar?
I doubt I could get my fat arms under the intake manifold to unscrew the oil filter.

Mess is good. Its oil...lubricates as well as protects. Plus it gives me a chance to clean things up a bit while I'm under there.
Brandon - Who perfers to get a little messy.

Yeah, I agree. I like the relocation kit. Anyone know how much, and if there would be a loss of pressure, how much more oil, and other useful information?
If you can't remove your filter by HAND, it's too phucking tight in the first place.
Yack - who thinks oil filter wrenches are a waste of $$$, unless some phucktard previous owner used one.

On my GS-R, I loosen the oil filter from underneath, then go up top and unscrew it and let it fall into my drain pan. It's still a bit messy, but at least it's not getting on me. Oh, and I still have the stock dual runner intake manifold. It's a tight squeeze, but I can reach it.
You should change your oil after the car is warm. Your oil is a little more thin because of the heat, and you will get more deposits out...just advice.
And for all the people who are concerned about the mess - change your oil from behind the drivers side wheel (grab the filter from behind, not underneith) and you wont have any issues.
