are upper ball joints supposed to be grease packed?

i pulled my suspension apart.when i looked up into the upper ball joint all this crud fell out.i'm assuming this thing is supposed to b packed in grease right?any help would be great thanks.

thanks man i thought so.i assume what fell out was hardened grease and maybe a bushing.
