Default Inspecting block deck height

I have a used b18c and im checking to see if the block has been decked or not.

With a depth mic to both pads at #4 cyl and the pad at #1 I get .040

Is this correct amt of material to assume its stock deck height and not been cut?

If thats not accurate and theres a better or more correct way to do this please advise.

Thanks!

Yes the pads that define when the block has been cut down to the limit.

I would actually like to know the proper way to measure from CL of the crank to the top of the deck.

the best way i can think of is by placing a rod that fits inside of the mains and measuring from the rod to the deck, then divide the main bore by two and add the length from the rod to the deck and half of the main bore.

im sure there is better expert advice than mine

the actual acccurate way of checking deck height will include a 8-9in. mic as per my f series block and you will put in on the main cap seating which is on the bottom of the block and the top of the hg mating surface...

do this on both sides to measure it properly with 1 measurement on each side of the cap seating surface then make an average

Good info. Thanks
Except of course I only have mics up to 6 inch.
To understand correctly, I can take a dissasembled block, put it on a surface plate and using a height gage with the block upside down measuring from the bottom to the main cap surface, NOT the journal, will tell me the deck height correct?

So that would be the only way to know if block is cut?
To be clear- there is no set number to reference measuring the pads when the when the shortblock is assembled?

I mean that if anyone knows that these motors allow up to .040 to be removed, then its safe to say my block is untouched.

alright my friend, this is the way I normally do it at the shop, place the short block on the granite surface plate with the hg mating surface facing up, put a .0001" indicator to the height gage and zero out the indicator ON THE MAIN CAP CLAMPING FACE NOT BEARING BORE and zero out the height gage(digital or dial gaged)...then travel upwards and touch the top of the block in various locations while monitoring the height gage zero and take down measurements...make your average...

then proceed with a mic and measure it from the places to check after the block has been skimmed for flatness the same goes for cyl. head height measurements except you'll touch the granite plate for your zero then the top of the cyl. head it's super easy if you have access to these tools

Hmm, I would have used a surface plate, height gauge and indicator... But either way would work.
