Default Mainshaft Thrust Clearance

Is there any way to set/check it without the mainshaft holder tool?

yes.

I've NEVER used the preload tool.

What tranny you messing with? I have a trick I learn when I shimmed my first D series. I've never followed the factory manual since.

H22. If it'd help, I can post excerpts of the relevant helms section.

I don't use the holder either. I use a trick to check it. Probably the same as Bone since there aren't a whole lot of ways you can check it.

MistaBone does your method involve using a dial indicator at all? I understand you have to use feeler's to get find out the clearance between the mainshaft and the clutch and trans housings, to pick which shim to use. After that though, you need to use the dial indicator to actually find out the clearance..right?
