Default Rubber weight on the clutch arm question...

I was cleaning the tranny and get it ready for fresh paint and I see my clutch arm and spotted the rubber piece getting ready to fall off any time. Should I be worried about that piece? Wondering if I could just remove it? Does it do anything else expect weigh the arm down?

here a pic of what I'm talking about.

The red I circle is the piece I'm talking about, The blue circle is the part that is completely torn off, the other one is barely hanging.

Yeah, it's a vibration dampener of some sort.

Mine was half hanging off when I rebuilt my trans last year, I used window weld on it and it stayed together just fine.

So it there for vibrations on the arm, will it hurt anything if I took it off? Besides, I think it looks cleaner without it, but I don't want to take it off if it going to mess anything.

You probably wont even notice its gone. may feel slight vibrations in the clutch pedal but I doubt it.

But I still don't see how that hunk of rubber on the lever helps any. There's a spring that pulls back the throw out bearing and pulls down the lever as well. I know it not rocket science but I have never seen this rubber piece on any other b,d,k, and so on series trannies.

Honda calls it a "Release Arm Damper". I don't see it protecting your TOB/trans from vibrations from your foot, and they don't exist on hydro clutch arms, so I can only conclude does nothing for the trans and the only thing they could do is shield you from any vibrations that could come down the clutch cable into the clutch/car. So...

You said you think it looks nicer without it anyway, so I'd take it off and see if I could tell it's gone.

found this while searching. thought it was pertinent

Vibration Isolator for Clutch control system:

United States Patent 4722428

A vibration isolator for an automobile clutch operating system having a clutch pedal in the automobile, a clutch release arm on the transmission, and an interconnecting mechanism therebetween, such as a cable, wherein a dynamic damper is mounted on one of clutch system moving components. The dynamic damper includes a damper weight and a resilient material, such as rubber, connecting the weight to the clutch system moving component.

and this is as well

http://www.patentstorm.us/patents/5579663.html

which explains why you would not see this present on a hydraulic setup

You are right about not seeing any on the hydraulic set up, but the older cable b series trannies dont have this as well.

my 93 ls tranny has this damper. are you referring to 90-91 specifically then maybe, cause i cant vouch for whether or not those have the dampers in place. if that is the case perhaps they didn't think to implement these things till a few years later.

Heh, US Patent Issued on December 3, 1996.
Honda should sue them, their design pre-dates '96

lol
