Default Replacing the stock coil with MSD one

Has somebody replaced the coil inside the distributor with external coil, for example MSD Blaster 2 or HVC II?

I am a bit confused concerning the Ballast resistor. Is it required or not in VTi-engine (B16A2)?

Our ignition needs to withstand long times under extreme loading. 6h on rpm range 4000-8500 1/r. Any other suggestions for the coil outside these MSD-ones?

you are going to get hammered for wanting to put something like that in your car. The factory ignition is good for several hundred hp. However I did install one many years ago after not being able to get a factory coil for something like a week. I have never had a problem with it in all these years. It is very strait forward to install just follow the instructions.

Car (engine: B16A2) is used in racing where we drive several hours using high rpm which causes coil to heat up. This heating damages coil and other components inside the distributor. External coil would be the solution for the heating issue.

MSD instructions tell that ballast resistor is required, but when checking some forums, they say that it is not. I do not know what to beleive and this is why asking if somebody has made the swap and have some real experience of the topic.

I do not want to argue with you guys, but I have lots of experience of at least 88-91 1.6i SOCH Hondas pretty weak OEM distributor on racing. We have ruined several races due to overheated/damaged coil. Overheating also affects to cam-sensors and other circuits inside the distributor.

This is why I would like to use external one on next season, with new VTi (B16A2) engine, which also has coil inside the distributor.

I would just like to know if somebody has installed external coil (for example MSD) is the ballast resistor needed or not.

If the MSD instructions say it's required and you plan on tracking the car... Spend the time and effort to put it in. They do pay engineers to design the parts and they wouldn't have included it if they felt it was not necessary.

That's just my 2 cents.

OK,

Second race and most probably broken coil!

Sypthoms:

- after everything heats up engine starts to misfire and do not accelerate => causing also idle to be rough
- after cooling down idle is close to normal

If there would be a vacuum leak, something wrong with the fuel it would be there already cold.

SO

We need to get rid of the coil inside the distributor. Distributor seems to be OBDII, with only one plug, but the car is 1996 EDM del sol with OBDI. Does anybody have exact knowledge is the ballast resistor required or not in that setup.

Or does somebody have any other good ideas what the h*ll is wrong?
