Default increasing my engine performance

Hi, I am not car savvy at all but I am interested in learning and improving my honda's performance. Anyway I was just wondering where I should start as far as getting more power out of it. I have a D16y8 sohc vtec engine in my civic. Im not sure if theres specific steps I should do first or if that matters. (again im a newb ) Any ideas or help would be great and I thank you for your time.

My suggestion is to read a LOT before you modify your engine. Browse forums, read books, and you'll start to see what works and what doesn't. Experimenting is a good way to learn, but if you don't know what you're doing, you'll probably just waste money and time.

In the meantime, make sure the car is maintained well.

ive been waiting for an opportunity to give this bit of advice so here goes.....

you seem like someone who is essentially a blank slate when it comes to cars and how they work. my suggestion to you is that before you go worrying about modifying and tricking out your ride, you get a real understanding of how every part of that car works. find out how motors run and what the parts of them are. study the braking system, suspension, and if youre bold enough, move on to electrical and interior. once you have a decent understanding of these things, modifications are much easier to understand and you can even make informed decisions ON YOUR OWN about which you do and dont need.
