Whats up peoples. Wife has a 99 accord ex. Had a noise coming from the front that sounded like a wheel bearing. Kept getting worse. Go to look at it today there was a bunch of movement top to bottom, left to right. Pulled the wheel and took a closer look. The upper ball joint was moving way more than normal, around 1/2". put a set of grips on it no movement. tried moving just the hub with it off, no movement. Can the upper ball joint cause this and explain the noise. Anyone seen this. its new to me.

 

the front wheel bearings have 2 inner races, which is why a bad bearing will make noise but not always wobble. If it sounds and behaves like a wheel bearing, it probably is. In addition, it sounds like the upper ball joint is unsafe, so replacing that is a no brainer.

not sure what your mileage is but those are both problems that are pretty typical, so I'm not shocked that you would have 2 problems.

 

looks like the bearing was bad along with the ball joint. I pulled both. Bearing didnt have movement but made a ton of noise. Upper ball joint was shot. Bummer that the upper is the whole assembly. You could press it but its a pain. we tried but its got no real flat surface to press on like the lower. car does have 166K so it was prob. time. Im sure the right will be going soon.
