Less than 1000mi ago I installed JUN III camshafts and valve springs. Took them off to lock the rockers to degree them (didn't have a degree kit when were installing the cams).

So one of the rockers and one cam lobe has an abnormal wear.

What could cause this kind of wear? Was it an imperfection on the cam and it will eventually smooth out? I'm considering buying a set of new rockers but I'm afraid the new rocker will be damaged the same way.

Would appreciate any advices on what to do.

Usually seems like a oiling problem.. Most cams/ rockers will show some type of wear after awhile.. specially bigger cams, that have a strong valvetrain behind them.

This looks like a oiling issuse tho, that or these cams were just slapping the pads due to a looser then normal valvelash.

I use Motul 300V 5w30. And this happened to the exhaust rocker of cylinder #1 (for what it matters).
Oiling issue means I have to check my oil pressure and clean the oil passages and orifices?

I'd start there.. what kind of oil pressure are u having at idle?

 

Motul 300v 5w-30 can hurt you.

Is this a street car?

To be honest I have not checked it. Will do once I assemble everything. The oil lamp is turned off right after I start the engine. And it does not blink on idle.

Yes, it's a street car with a few bolt-ons. I'm going to switch to 5w-40.

The rockers have 35000 miles on them. Was that a mistake not changing the rockers along with cams?

 

if this problem was an oiling issue, many of us would have figured that out by now.

It happened to me with crower cams using amsoil and a few other h22 guys on the forum.

Seems like you caught it before any horrible damage was done.

Yes, I'm aware of the problem with "eaten" exhaust rockers. But I did not find any solutions to the problem. The only reason I'm asking is I have only one rocker damaged. So I thought it is not related.

 

make sure your LMA on that rocker depresses correctly without sticking.

does the euroR have hydraulic or spring based LMAs?

It has spring based LMAs. I did not notice any sticking. One question though - should I be able to depress the LMA further when it is fully depressed by the lobe?

"soft" rockers, thin friction pads, bad metallurgy, oiling...the list goes on.

IIRC, doesnt JUN use Honda cores?

from what i've always knew, both spoon and jun use honda cores.

 

There are two part numbers for H22A rockers. One is for older H22A (A2) and another for the newer (A5,A5,A7,A8):
14620-P13-000
14620-P5M-000

Does anybody know what is the difference?
Is there a statistics which one tends to abnormal wear?

Do you track this car?? If not then there is no need to switch to 40. Try using 0w-30. And a good synthetic oil (your choice).

One of the causes of the abnormal wear could be a weak oil film which could not withstand stiffer valve springs. To my understanding 5w-40 has "stronger" oil film so I would like to try it.
