:: Manual Steering Rack VS Padawan's Removal Kit??
I'm looking to remove my power steering and would like to know if it would be better to:
a) Swap the power steering rack for a manual rack
b) Buy Padawans removal kit
Is there a big difference between the manual racks and the kit? I'm aiming to have the best feeling of control - I hate ps.
I'm leaning more towards the manual rack because I heard they have a better turning radius, but which would feel better?
Does anyone know where I can find a manual rack or know what Honda/Acura models that came with a manual rack will fit a 95 GSR?

The manual rack has an inferior ratio, so it will require you to turn the wheel more for the same radius turn.
You'll need to use a manual rack from an EG Civic, as all Integras came with PS.
I'm no expert, hopefully someone who has actually done the swap will chime in.

i have a EG rack in my integra with a h22 swap in it and it turns like butter. cant compare it to the removal kit though cause i haven't driven one but EG rack gets a
from me
from me
Is that easy to swap out or should I just pay someone to do it that has a lift?
So I can use anything from a 92-95 civic hatch, which is an EG right? How about a 92-95 civic coupe, EJ I believe?

Ah, I see. If I went with the removal kit would that be equally as bad or worse for autox? I'm under the impression the manual rack will turn better than the removal kit but not as well as powersteering. At high speeds the ps is to touchy.

The whole idea of looping the PS lines and venting the system was pioneered by RealTime Racing's Integra Type R road race cars. If a manual rack would have been better, I'm sure they would have used that, but they didn't. I have heard many people report only a small increase in steering effort as long as the tires are rolling.
Found some manual racks on ebay. Fully rebuilt and they even refund you 85$ when you give them your old one.

That's called a core exchange my man.
The op is looking to go from Power to manual so if he sent his in power steering rack in exchange they would not refund his $$$. Better off at a junk yard and/or your local craigs list. $223 is not cheap when it comes to manual steering!

I'm in the process of swapping my PS rack for a manual out of a junk yard. Just have no motivation to go into my 20º garage and work. But I got my manual rack from the junk yard for $100 and they pulled it.
Also last time I PM'd Padawan he said he was no longer selling his delete kit. But things could have changed since then.

Not to thread jack but if the ps rack is left with no pump or any looping the ps lines or venting the system how would that affect the rack? I heard that it wouldn't be to good for the rack because it needs the lubrication...is this true?
Leaving a small amount of PS fluid inside the rack will provide all the lubrication you need. Your main concern is keeping out moisture and debris, which is why you don't just want to leave the rack "open".
i opted to go with the manual rack in my car, and i love it.
i havent done any auto=x or road racing with it, but i have been to tail of the dragon and some other mountain roads with it and it did wonderfully. when your driving on roads like that you dont notice that your turning the wheel anymore, and it felt much better.
yes you do have to turn the wheel more in tight situations, but you also reduce your turning circle, which is always helpful. took me about a week of driving to get used to not having power steering, and now i love it
there were two problems i ran into when i put the eg rack in my dc
1) you need to get the universal joint at the base of the steering column from the civic. the splines are different sizes on the manual vs. power rack
2) the manual rack is smaller in diamater then the power one. this is important because of the rubber bushing on the passenger side. im guessing you might be able to use the civic bushing and bracket, but i did not have them, so what i did was leave the civic bushing on the rack, and put the bushing from the integra over it, doubling it up, thus makeing the integra bracket work

How would changing to a manual rack reduce your turning circle? Turning circle is determined by how far the rack moves, but is also limited by the amount of room under the front fenders before the tire rubs against the frame rails.
I just checked the Civic's specs, and hatchbacks with both manual and power racks had the exact same turning circle diameter.

Turning circle is usually determined mostly by the car's wheelbase. For example, all 96-00 Civics, all models, all trims, all have the exact same turning circle, and also all have the exact same wheelbase, regardless of whether they have manual or power steering (which often have different ratios).
i might have to compare to another integra just to see, cause now im curious of whether i really can turn sharper or its just my imagination
