Just use motor oil. 10w 30 is good. About 2 - 2.5 quarts. I learn this from school. And the fastest way to put oil in your tranny is thru the speed sensor. Hope this helps

No.. You should only be using the Honda MTF(or equivalent) fluid.
Buy 3 quarts, and you'll be safe if you flush, and top it off.

10w30 is an equivalent fluid for honda transmissions. and you're not suppose to top it off. fill from the fill bolt till it starts to pour out.

They have now a "new formula" I get it in about 6 case quanities for about 4.50/quart, Retail is about 7.50 for the new improved fluid.
Dealers up here only use motor oil with services unless you SPECIFICALLY tell them to use MTF....

So I should just put the same oil I use for the engine, into the tranny as well?

When I bought some from the dealership almost 2 years ago, I was charged $9.00 a quart. I bought some more this year expecting to pay the same and was only charged about $6.00. I think the guy charged me less because I was going there 2 times a week ordering parts and we were getting cool.

Older Hondas specified 10w30 engine oil for their manual transmissions. But newer lubricants are developed, and now they specify Honda MTF, which is a 10w30 fluid but made specifically for manual transmissions. MTF is obviously going to be better for the transmission, so why be a cheap@$$ and use motor oil? A single fill of MTF can easily last 25K+ miles, so why is it such a big deal to spend $30 every 25K miles?
However I use GM Synchromesh Friction Modified. Stuff friggen rocks in my 270K mile transmission. Good luck finding any, though. I think I paid about $40 or $50 for the last case of 6 at the Chevy dealer where my buddy works.

Just remember, they've got several formulations of it. The one you want/need is 12377916, the only one with the friction modifier. My Chevy dealer quoted me $12 a quart, and I would have to buy a case of 6 for them to bother ordering it

It's $5.25/qt for me with my employee discount. Prices have gone up pretty steadily. I remember paying $4/qt three years ago.
I'd recommend you only use GM SM FM/Penzoil SM only if you've got notchy gears or gears that grind (when switching at higher RPM's). Otherwise, stick to the OEM stuff.

My transmission has 270K miles w/ all original internals. I started using GM SM FM at 148K miles (correction from above). So I've been using it for nearly half the miles on the transmission, with NO issues whatsoever. Shifts perfectly even at cold startup in single-digit temperatures in the winter.
Also I would only recommend the Friction Modified version of GM SM, not Pennzoil SM. It is NOT the same fluid.
