Default 89 hatch b16a swap with a few problems.

Okay My buddy has an 89 hatch with a few problems. Below is a list of the problems he is having with the car.

Problem #1: The Vtec is his car is not working at all. It was having a problem to where it wouldn't work at all before and I had taken the Vtec Spool Senor off of one of my spare engines and replaced it awhile ago and it fixed the problem. Now a couple months later it would kick in and out of Vtec. But now even worse it doesn't kick in at all. The car does still go to 8 grand tho if that helps out at all with the decision on what it could be. So I was trying to figure out what the problem could be with it. There isn't a check engine light on so I have no idea I'm stuck. So does anyone have any ideas for me to try?

Problem #2: Okay so I went to my buddies house today and he mentioned that he isn't driving the hatch anymore. I asked him why and he said that he thinks the timing belt had jumped time because the car backfires a lot. He said when he was driving it, it makes a real wierd sputtering and backfiring sound and then he starts to go in it and it will back fire really loud and sputter and it will not let him go any faster. The car will also stall out on him. He didn't take me for a ride in it because he didn't want to mess it up anymore but when he started it up in the parking lot where he lives we lightly reved it up and I was listenin to maybe try and figure it out. The engine didn't sound like it was blown or anything was messed up with it. Not even a slight valve tap at all it sounded normal. It's just when he tries to drive it. It backfires and sputters and wants to stall out on him. Do you think that maybe the timing belt could have maybe jumped a little. I don't know if a b16 is like a prelude motor to where if it jumps time the motor will get ruined or not. I am just lost on what all coud be wrong with it.

So thanks anyone who could help me out I would really appreciate it. I hate seeing a bad *** ride just sittin. If it is the timing whats the easiest way to check it and what is the easiest way to fix it?

Thanks A Lot

Well wouldn't the check engine light come on if it was the distributor or something with the ignition?
