Default Popping Off Rear Hatch Shocks

I'm having a bear of a time getting the old Hatch Shocks off my '89 DX Hatch. It does not have a clip that release it but looks like it is popped off. I can't get a good leverage with a pry bar nor can I knock if off with a rubber mallet as it just absorbs the shock. Helms says nothing about this. The tips also look metal so I can't simply break the old ones off. Is there any neat trick to do this? Or should I break out the dremel and cut the balled end in half?

If the retaining clips are popped off it should come off easily, are you sure the clips aren't still on?
