knocking noise when engine is cold

knocking noise when engine is cold
i have been drivin my car (97 civic ex) without a knock sensor for about a month now and this morning before school i turned it on and it was making more of a clanking not knocking noise
the weird thing is that it only did it when the engine was at a cool temp
any thoughts?
