Default Changine valve seals: Do i really need compressed air?

I really really want to change my valve seals because i dont like pouring in a quart a week. The only thing holding me back is acquiring a air compressor. I was wondering if i can just crank the motor manually so that the cylinder i'm working with is at TDC. If it's at TDC the valve shouldn't drop for that cylinder right?

First off if your losing a qt a week it most likey means you need more then new seals.
Yes you need air.

sorry i have to disagree with that i've been in a situation where i didn't have to use air.

While it's not neccesary to have it to remove the valve springs, it sure would be a big help when it comes time to put the springs back on.

air gun to put valve springs back on? are you serious? you know the valve is held onto the retainer by keepers.. there's no air gun involved in that. i use to use a bench vise to compress the springs and use zip ties to hold them compressed and install the retainer and slip the keepers in.. and cut the zip ties.. dangerous yes i know but hey if you know what you're doing then its not..

Where does anyone say anything about an air gun?You fill the cyl with air so it holds the valves up when you want to remove/replace the springs/seals.

I've dissasembled hunderds of heads in the shop and most times the keepers are so locked into the retainer it needs to be tapped with a small hammer to dislodge them.

All I can say is that I'd rather have the air hold the valve when I'm depressing the retainer to remove the keepers then it smacking the piston top.

take some soft cotton rope, tie a knot in one end, and take the other end and feed a bunch of it into the cylinder, slowly crank the engine by hand till the rope is pushed up against the valves. You can now pull the springs and seals. When done lower the piston, pull the rope out, and go to the next one. I've done this at the strip where we didn't have a compresser.

do you think it could be my rings too? the motor runs really strong, it just leaks oil at high rpm.

if i was losing compression the motor wouldnt be as strong. The motor feels and pulls like its really healthy.

Noboby had an air tank at the track for their tires?

yep I still don't understand how people think seals are going to leak 1 qt in like 150 or so miles.
Denial isn't a river in Egypt, you need rings.

150 miles? i drive at least 400 a week and yeah its about a quart. if not less. i dont know how much a quart raises the level on the dipstick, so my guess is a quart.

Dude you just don't get it,seals arent going to leak a qt even if you drove 1000mi a week.
The fact that it burns at high rpm doesn't tell you something?

the easy and simple way is to do a cylinder leak down test on all the cylinders and it will show where the problem is. i would be betting the rings are the major issue at hand.

dude, im not retarded.. burning oil at high rpm doesnt necessarily mean rings.... Like i said., the compression numbers come out good on all cylinders. i added oil too and the compression numbers remained the same.

You can have good consistent compression and have shitty oil control...... what causes this?!?!? I'll give you a hint.... they are on the pistons and control oil.....
