use the gsr 4.40 final drive. what i would do is put gsr countershaft 1st and 2nd including the synchro set inbetween those two gears onto the gsr countershaft/pinion. same gear ratios as ls 1st and 2nd but has the higher friction dual cone synchro setup found in the vtec transmissions. finish countershaft with ls countershaft 3-5 gears. ls and gsr mainshafts are the same. for the mainshaft, use ls 3rd and 4th gears w/ ls 3/4 synchro set. top with ls 5th and 5/r synchro set. make sure to use the 3/4 shift fork from the ls since the gsr 3/4 fork is too big for the non vtec 3/4 sleeve.

*the only synchros you can straight swap over from gsr to ls is the 5th/r synchro set.

thank you very much the information you have provided has been very useful but i want to keep the speed capability of the ls tranny and the low cruising rpms while getting rid of that pesky grind when shifting into 2nd and 3rd in high rpms i was told it is a common ls tranny problem that a gsr does not have . on top of all that how much would it cost to have u build a tranny the way you described and shipped to 17062

so basically straight LS spec...4.26 w/ LS 1-5. to get rid of the 3rd gear grind, it would depend on the conditions of the brass synchro, synchro spring, gear cone, and 3rd gear side synchro mesh on the 3/4 sleeve to see which would solve the grind. could be one or combination of all those. yes LS has less friction surface on 2nd gear (single cone) and also a lot less friction surface on 3rd and 4th compared to the bigger vtec synchro cones on the gears which the non vtec would wear out faster and not brake/slow the gear down causing wear and the eventual consistent grinding. 1st and 5th/r have the same size between non vtec and vtec transmissions. 2-4 take most all the abuse of course. which is why i always suggest gsr 1/2 dual cone 2nd synchro setup w/ accompanying gsr 1st and 2nd countershaft gears. and there is a trick to make 3rd and 4th shift better and last longer...i will send you a pm.

Unlikely the synchro is causing the grind. Can't use GSR final drive with the LS diff.
