Default transmission stuck in 4th, need advice asap

i was rolling down the freeway around 70mph, and i got stuck behind a slow driver, so i downshifted to fourth and whipped around him... everything was COMPLETELY NORMAL, no noises, no grinding, no nothing, until i tried to shift to fifth.

i noticed my 4th to 5th shift was surpsingly sloppy, but it still felt like it went in gear, when i let out the clutch it was still in fourth, then i realized that i can now wiggle my shifter from 1-5-r freely sliding into the gears and out without them actually being put into the gears. it does it all with the clutch disengaged too, im stuck in 4th gear!

im pretty sure its nothing to do with my linkage because it still floats through the gear pattern and clicks in to 1-5-r, loosely but it still does (clutch does not need to be engaged to do so)

any ideas? otherwise it looks like i got a very big rebuild project on my hands.

thanks guys

Try shutting it off, and going to first, and starting it up in first. /shrug

you should pull the shift linkage.
most likely the plastic bushing busted and the pin moves more...
at least check it out. my old eg had worn bushings on the linkage bolt really bad and was hard to shift in place.... i replaced the shift linkage and never had that issue again.
could be the stabilizer bar or swivel bushings also....

Definitely your shift linkage came unscrewed from the car or it broke in some manner.
