Stuff i learned during a b18c build
Over the course of this motor i've learned a few things i thought noteworthy to share with HT. If this helps someone else who is doing a build i have done my job.
1. forged pistons with full floating pins can actually be press fit like factory. the machine shop just press fits the pit on the rod like factory. a very good builder told me that it's actually safer on the factory rod since the honda rods are thin on top and he didn't like the idea of boring them for a bronze bushing.
2. my 160k GSR has pistons that could have been re ringed and installed with a fresh hone. if you do regular oil changes the bottom end is likely in similar condition to mine. the crank was perfect and someone could do an econo rebuild with rings and bearings on the cheap {i know many of you have done this}
3. main and rod clearances read different with plastigauge and a bore gauge. the bore gauge is far more accurate.
4. the deck of my block was way off. .007 down in the middle which is why i had that black leaking head gasket combustion marking on top of the cylinder walls. to those of you who do head gasket changes or head work. measure your deck, if it is anything like mine was your gasket won't seal long if it even does.
5. some engine ****, just a basic DD build, i'll be happy to get my teg back on the road.
