Default How to remove my trunk latch.

I have a 88 hatchback, i guess year don't matter. Anyways my hatch latch is about half an inch off from the lock. When I close my hatch it won't lock because it is so far off. I tried take the right size philips and flathead screwdriver to remove the latch, but only thing i manage to accomplish is strpping the bolt.

anyone have an easier way of removing it? I don't want to strip anymore bolts and it is harder than hell to turn. I'm thinking of using power drill, but don't know if thats going to budge those philip head bolts loose.

Help me out.
