Default Possible engine knock? (Engine noise)

A couple days ago I hit a pot hole or something. Ever since my car has been making a knocking noise. The noise gets faster as the engine revs higher so I think it's something with the engine. What's the best way to diagnose this? It's a 97 GSR. Thank you.

Do you have a CEL? If you do, it's most likely the knock sensor. It will pick up an abnormal vibration in the engine, and throw a code.

Nope, no CEL. It's starting to scare me, something might be horribly wrong... :[

have you checked out the bottom of the car? is anything bent? broken? any oil loss? any oil left in engine? if it started when you hit a pothole, you might be lucky and just have bent something, maybe the oil pan?

I haven't gotten a chance to check out the bottom. I'll try tomorrow morning. Could low oil do this? The oil level is pretty low, up to the first mark.

low oil can definately do this. I just replaced an ls motor with a rod knock due to low oil.

this is what i whould do. do a complete oil change. let car idle for 5 min and rev at 2500 for 2 min. then rotate the crank counter clockwise and see if you feel any thing. then check motor mount maybe one twisted or a busted thread and bolt slid up shaft. possibly loose tranny to motor connection. gl bro it cant be that many things pretty **** simple.

Is your motor idling bad??.......if it does it could be a bent valve
if it doesn't it could also be some thing wrong with your rods, or bearings.....may be just an exhaust leak.
was there water in that "pot hole" ??
do you have a cold air intake??
did your motor turned off when this happened???
give us a little more info. so we can give you better answers

Idling same as it always did, nothing different. Nope, no water in the pot hole. I have a SRI. Engine kept running when I hit it. I didn't hear the sound right after I hit the hole. I dropped my GF off and started the car up again, 5 min later was when I started to notice it. Not 100% sure on that though.

With the engine running and the hood open, slowly rev the engine up and down a little bit and move your head around the engine bay and see if you can narrow down where the noise is coming from. See if you can be sure if it's coming from around the transmission, the block, the timing belt area, accessory belt area (power steering pump, AC, alternator), etc. That might give you a better idea of what's going on.

Also, if there's oil on the dipstick at all, your oil level isn't nearly low enough to cause serious problems, so I wouldn't worry about that at all. Still might want to top it off though.

I'm pretty sure it's coming from the engine. I went to the mechanic today and he said it was because I had low oil and ran it hard. I haven't ran it hard for a while and the knocking just started 2 days ago. He also said the bottom end is good but the head had something wrong. Something about a cylinder head. He wants me to do a complete engine swap, 2800 parts and labor for a GSR engine.

My car sounds like this one. The sound doesn't stop though it just keeps going until the engine is shut off. I added more oil and it's still the same.

Also, is it ok to drive it? The mechanic told me not to or something will break, just want to make sure. It's my only car.

2800 parts and labor for a full engine swap? Would it be a used engine? If he's using new parts he's just going to do the head.

Update**

Checked the spark plugs today. The fourth one I think looks burnt. It's black and has a sort of sooty residue. The one farthest to the left on pass. side. Tried to turn the cams by hand, couldn't do it. They would move a little but wouldn't turn a full turn.

ur not gonna be able to turn the cams by hand unless ur like hercules or something. you have to take the drivers side wheel off. you will see a big bolt holding the very bottom pulley onto the crankshaft. put your wrench on that and rotate it counter clockwise with the battery disconnected. and see what you "feel". you may have to take all the belts off the accesories in order to get a good feel, never tried to turn it with them on dont know if its possible.
