what welder for 16gauge mild steel?
What welder do you fabrication guys use? I'm gonna be welding some mild steel pipes.....is something like the wire feed from home depot ok ($339)....or is that weld kit a piece of junk?
I used wire feed to weld in JDM front end and a couple of piping, 16 gauge...but I am still learning to make weld beads, I have been practicing spot welds, the wire feed works great...for spot welds...

If you want it pretty, TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) with a high nickel (stainless steel) filler rod. I use 100% argon cover gas.

My welder uses a 130amp Miller wire feed MIG welder with argon gas cover. When you're welding, tac your pipes together first then go over it evenly with the MIG gun. Definitely use gas, the welds will be much more even and prettier.
Arc=ugly junk
gas-less MIG=still ugly
Argon MIG=good
TIG=great
TIG w/ good filler=professional
I use argon/CO2 covered MIG with 0.30 wire. It works very well on 16ga steel but takes some practice to get the feed speed and voltage set right. It is the all purpose welder IMO.
