carpet / tracking device
Soo I got my car back from the shop.. And I notice it had this smell to it.. Yuck! So I started to clean my car and I notice the smell came from the carpet. I end up pulling out the whole carpet it was soak with all nasty kinds of things. Any ways after I pulled out my carpet I notice a black box like if its some tracking device. It has a power wire and ground. I am paying off my car. So I think the dealer put that there so if I fall back on payment he can find me. I am afraid to cut cuz I really dunno if that's my part of my alarm.. I doubt it tho.. But just want to make sure. I have a clifford. I'm gonna bring the car to the shop I got my clifford and see if that's part of it. And last thing where can I get new carpet?
take a pic of the box and post it.
I have carpet that I took out of my ek coupe. I power washed it and it looks pretty clean now. I'll sell it to you. I bought a custom carpet for it.

where do the wires lead to? that does look like a GPS tracking system. are there any connections that would look that could hook up to a computer. Because a lot of them can store where u have been and then once uploaded they can see your travel pattern. I have friends i a lot of places and some of those are in law enforcement thats the only way I know that.
its ground to the frame of the car and then a power wire the go under the panel and looks like its connected to the ecu.. i dunno i gotta look into it when i have more time.. can ppl dp that without my word? can i sue or something?
alot of dealerships are doing that in cali with the new cars but they have a light pattern like a traffic light. Green your payment is good . Yellow your getting close to your payment. And red good luck starting your car cause they shut it off until you pay. Looks like some alarm imo. No gps tracker looks like that first off they have to be mounted in certain places in order for the box to get a signal.
i work at a delership in san diego... that does look like a gps tracking device that i have seen...the dealer doesnt have to tell you that its there if its only a gps but you do have to sign a concent form if its the one were they can cut your **** off until you pay ur bill...so most likely if u have bad credit it is one...

Big Brother, what?
What's on the underside of the box? I would expect serial numbers and such to be there, if anything.

invasion of privacy? cant even drive around without big brother knowing where you are going and where you have been. (if so is the case with the box) if i found sometihn like that in my car i would go knock the owner of the dealership out.
i would be scared with something like this in my car. a smart theif could easily find where the signal gets sent and then know where your cars sitting. watch it long enough you start to notice a pattern on where it sits.
contact a lawyer and find out if there is anything legally you can do to stop this ****. its not right at all. loosing one right at a time.

You know, you might try just shielding it out - cover the box with heavy gage metal foil or mesh (ideally, several layers of copper mesh) and ground the mesh to the chassis. That should keep it from getting a GPS signal in or a cell signal out.
Then wait to see if they call you ... or if your car turns off
This is pretty much
, by the way. Check all your paperwork very carefully - I dunno about you, but last time I bought a car, I had to sign my name to about 40 pieces of paper and not all of them made sense in the time frame I had at the dealer. I know, I know, I can hear my dad yelling at me from the grave "always read what you're signing", but still - I might believe that you actually signed somewhere saying you agreed to this without really understanding.

ya that looks like one of those gps auto kill things.... unplug it and see what happens... if the car still starts up leave it unpluged for awhile... if the car wont start up then plug it back in and see if it will start up. if it wont start up call your car seller place and tell them ya found somekind of box when replacing the dirty carpet and ask them if its theres and to reset it or what not... the ones my friends have had have a keypad on them somewhere where they could punch in a code to restart the system if the carlot sent the STOP FEATURE on the car.
ive always wondered how those systems work myself. id asume its a simple ecu power or ground kill switch basicaly...... should be very easy to disable if it is ... heck they remove the system when you pay the car off so its gotta be easily removable....
worst thing id think they would do is if you unplug it and they cannt get a signal then they would cal ya if ya miss a payment, then ya just tell them ya just unpluged it after replacing the carpet and not knowing what that box did so you just unpluged it
ive wanted to know more about those systems anyways for more theft issues.... would love to call a number and punch a code in to kill the car and or track it as well.
lowjack is not available in my area.
is there any numbers or names on the box?

If he unplugs it though, it could cause for the car to notstart which would be a PITA, especially if he has to have it towed back to the dealer to have it set up again, because you know darn well the dealer aint gonna pay that bill, he will have to....check the paperwork again and see what you come up with, or just call the dealer and ask them whats up, report back though we are all curious as to the black box mystery!!

Let's not forget the rest.

The OP is probably not the first owner of this car, so it's very likely it was installed for a reason besides the "dealership tracking him down".

Hell yeah I'm going to rip it out.. Now that I think about it. Alot of cars I seen him sold ends up back in his lot for sale again. I dunno how this dealer works off the clock.. He might have some dudes tracking cars like mines and stealing it back for him. Its a scam to me. Because I make payments on the car. and in florida u have to have full coverage insurance if your doing payments. And every month I have to go over there and he can see if I did any work to my car. Which I plan to boost it since I bought a t60. So if my car gets stolen my full coverage insurance will pay off the car and give him his money. Then he can rip off the parts he wants like my t60. then will buy the car back from the auction for dirt cheap and sell it again. Start the prosess all over again... that's toooo high of a risk for me now to keep that in.. I'm tired of the city bus lol.. If anything I can find a program that can track my tracker and flip it on him..
IF YOU BOUGHT YOUR CAR FROM A DEALER OR SOMETHING I ADVISE YOU TO CHECK YOUR CAR!!
