Anyone know how much HP OEM LSD can handle?
My bro has a built 450whp ls turbo currently and we are thinking of picking up this ys1 cable tranny with oem lsd for $650. Just wondering if the lsd will hold up the power. If not then we're just gonna buy quaife.
Something to consider is the LSD that came in the YS1 is a viscous unit and is probably approaching the end of it's service life (especially if it has any history of being driven hard). It can certainly be rebuilt (basically just cleaning it up and replacing the fluid), and there are no negative side effects for not rebuilding it (just acts as a regular open diff). The larger issue here is that even if it is in good shape (or if you rebuild it), it's still a wear item and putting 450 whp is only going to wear it out faster. I'd buy a Quaife if I were you.
IF you have the option and money to get the Quaife that is the route I would go.
OEM LSD are just 1-way. With Quaife you can get 1.5-way or a full 2-way LSD.
Plus, the Quaife is a torsen type LSD if I remembery correctly and (in my personal opinion) are better at distributing usable torque than gear type differentials.

why do you say that? it's not like the LS tranny is stronger or anything...

If you want longer gears then LS is fine.
If you want shorter ones for increased acceleration, then LS is not the one.

My bro ran 11.5 with a ls tranny with kaaz lsd at 25psi. We're looking to turn up the boost to 30 and get a b16 or gsr tranny with lsd then hit 10's. But yeah before we just had a regular b16 tranny and there was no traction 1st and 2nd with 24.5" M/T slicks (no lsd) so thats why we switched to the ls tranny with kaaz lsd. Now I think we might just buy quaife for a gsr trans and go cable to hydro.
