Default rebuilding a D15 head

Ok I've decided to rebuild the head on my D15 since it blew the gasket. I am going to get a good head that I know is unwarped and uncracked. Of course a machine shop will do the rebuild, but are there any specific parts I should get that would be better than the stock components? I know D15 performance parts are hard to find. Also, will it be a hard job if I take the head off and put it back on myself? The shops around here are wanting around 800 to do it and that's pretty hefty!
