2 Stroke Street maintanance
hey guys
There is this RS50 around my area with a bad engine for a killer price. i was thinking of picking it up and shoving a 125/250 engine in there and upgrade some stuff and get it as close to a rs250 as i can. the problem is, what would be my average service interval with a Dirtbike engine out of any of the big4? how often am i going to have to do the topend services on street use?
any comments are welcome
thanks

its a fun idea but you'd wanna be ready for some serious work and considerable expense for a debatable amount of gain.
i bought a cheapo Suzuki RG125 with the intention of fitting a 4 stroke single (450/600-660) i stripped it down and a bike wrecker told me i'd need a portion of the donor bikes wiring and the ECU too (also remember if u wanna use a dirtbike motor u might want one with an alternator for lights and other electrical items), this, coupled with the fact that i'd have to line up the sprocket and the problem that the suzuki's swingarm pivot spindle bolted thru the original engine and would probably want to on the new unit, just put me off completely.
it sounded like waay too much work and i could only guess how crap it would be to ride, i figured it might be worth doing on a RGV250 frame cos you'd at least have reasonable handling equipment to start with. on the spindly 125 it seemed a waste of time, and on a 50...? it might be fun, but it might be totally crap too?
with all the hours you'd spend on it, you could do somethin that earns you money and with the extra cash you could just buy something fun to ride?
i could think of dozens of cheap interesting bikes that would almost certainly be more fun to ride than an RS50 with a 125/250cc 2 stroke single

some pics of the beast

and stripped down

i bought it for 100 euro and sold it for the same
i suppose if you're game for the work and think it might be fun, fair enough. but i still reckon you could buy something that would whoop said projects *** for less money and time/effort than you'd spend on said project, thats just one opinion

To give you an idea...
Two Stroke duty cycles are measured in Hours as opposed to mileage.
however, they are relatively cheap to maintain and rebuild, its your call. for a first bike its not really a good idea, as you will be spending a lot of time maintaining it, and the power band is not really what one would refer to as... user friendly

thanks so much for the opinions guys. i completely understand what you are saying, and the maintanace is not that much work on a 2 stroke, ive doen it a ton of times on my friends dirtbikes, but on the street its something else, because you cant constantly beat the **** out of the engine, and if you dont do that it will foul a plug....
on the other hand, i could build a 35hp bike that weights around 230LBS WET
and its not going to be my first bike. i have a cb400 that i ride, LAWLZ

among the reasons why i wanted to use a 4 stroke single in my hybrid, 1 was to avoid having to design/fabricate a custom expansion chamber/exhuast had i went the 2 stroke route, i didnt think it would be possible to use one from a donor dirt bike and the shape and size of those chambers is meant to have a massive effect on a 2 strokes' state of tune and performance?
also the reliability/ease of maintenance aspect came into it
