CRX d-series transmission nightmare- please help!!!
trying to replace the transmission in my 91 crx dx with a 96 non vtec motor in it. Bought a 96-00 clutch to match the splines(20) on the transmission i bought at the junkyard. however, the clutch i bought is not bolting to the flywheel on the engine.
dont know what the transmission originally came out of, just that it is a 88-91 cable tranny with 20 splines. just put in new seals in anticipation of recieving the new clutch.
the original clutch from the engine i have has 21 splines and is a smaller than the one i puchased(said to be 96-00 and 20 splines) the one i purchased does however fit on transmission i have.{ L3-2418358 and inside the stamp is 12/21}
Can any one help me figure out: what tranny i have, flywheel i need, or a clutch the correct diameter with 20 splines that i can order somewhere?PLEASE HELP...

The reason why the new clutch disk will not bolt onto the flywheel is because you are trying to put 90-91 clutch disk on a 88-89 flywheel. You previously had a 88 transmission (21 splines) and were using a 200mm flywheel (88-89).
You have two options
- return the clutch disk for an 89
- replace the flywheel with a 90-00 (212mm)

but the engine is from a 96 and i never pulled the flywheel when i put the old transmission on. sorry maybe i didnt explain well, is the 96 fly wheel the same as the 212 or not and if i chang my fly wheel to the correct(bigger?) will i need a new or different starter.
88 trans only had the 21 splines on it and smaller flywheel
89 had 20 splines with small flywheel
90-00 had 20 splines and a larger flywheel
someone along the line has changed the flywheel and trans to a 88, i assume you bought the car this way correct?
I would just get a 90-00 flywheel and slap it on so your new trans will work.

i bought the car stock (dx) then put in d16y8 and converted but was unfortunately unaware of the tranny the i used....(first swap was done at a shop who ended up being scumbags....cause they put a motor and tranny in that i didn't bring them they swapped the one i brought for one that they had. needless to say i had problems with that motor, so they put new bearings in the bottom end and within 6 months it blew...and i did break it in correctly. So i was finished with shops and decided to not be lazy and do my work myself.. I bought an engine out of a 96 d15b7 that had been wrecked took it out disconnected the tranny that was on it and put it in with the tranny those shop scumbags gave me, but never disconnected the flywheel from the 96 and it all bolted up with the existing clutch.LUCKY I GUESS... Car ran great for a couple years daily driver and very little abuse. i knew it wasnt fast so i didnt race. the synchros started going and one day the tranny bit the dust, luckily in the driveway. went to the junkyard got a tranny i thought matched and it didnt fit wrong # of splines. i got pissed off and let it sit for about 6 months or so and bought a mk2 vwGTI auto for 500 drove it and it broke down so now i have two cars that dont run and only want to keep my crx i just love it. so i now sent the clutch back that i bought(96-00) and am looking for the one that fits or i guess a flywheel that would work, but if i get a new bigger fly wheel will my starter work or should i get a diff clutch, or a clutch and flywheel set...but which one.. sorry for the long story again but i tried to answer the question thoroughly to get a correct explanation. thanks guys ...please help

Whatever the year your tranny is, then that is the clutch and flywheel that you need to buy, the only exception is the 89 year tranny, you can use the clutch and flywheel from a 90 or 91. You buy a clutch for the type of tranny you have in the car not the engine.
If you don't know what year tranny you have, then google it, a google search for "identify civic tranny 89" got me this on the first post. https://honda-tech.com/zerothread/1551508

your started will be fine to use. With either flywheel.
Firat ya need to messuare the flywheel surface, this is where the actual flywheel sits on the flywheel it will be a smooth area. Messuare from the outter part of where the disk sits only , not way out to the ring gear..Whats does it say
what ya need to do next is look at your new tranny and count the splines on the shaft count them 3 times so you know for sure.
after you figure out the spline count you need to get the correct clutch kit for that spline count ok.Now if the count is 21 splines you need a clutch kit for a 1988 crx. and a fly wheel for a 88, or 89 to be correct fit.
If you came up with a 20 spline count you need a clutch kit for a "89"* small flywheel
Both the 88,89 have a smaller flywheel, and the 90 and up have a larger flywheel.
