The test seems very subjective at best and not scientific. Simply changing to new plugs usually nets some gains in power and/or fuel economy. The best way to test would be to install different types of NEW plugs, back-to-back and compare them. All gaps would have to be checked and made the same. Ideally a dyno test should follow and then a 100mi or so drive on the highway where the car would be refilled (after starting the trip with a full tank) and the total fuel consumed could be more accurately compared against the other plugs.
One way or the other, differences are usually small between different types of plugs and frequent changes of inexpensive NGK plugs give you the same or better results for roughly the same cost in most cases.
