The distributor doesnt control vtec

yes you can. I have a y7/z6 using the y7 dizzy. However it doesnt bolt right up. I had to modify the tabs for the mounting bolts on the diz housing. Running a p2p and vtec engages fine.

In my opinion i'd rather get the D16z6 distributor instead of having to modify any bolts. Just not one of the things I would mess with!

You could get a conversion harness or repin the z6 into the y7 plug. Or

Or better still swap the guts out of the Y7 distributor into the Z6 case. I've done this between D15B7 and D16Z6 distributors before. I'm 99.9% sure that everything inside the OBD2A distributor is the same as the OBD1 versions.

It all boils down to how do you want to skin your cat.
