So I started my car here in the shop at work today and a couple techs noticed some white/blueish type smoke coming out from the exhaust. Nothing major....but they said when I exited and hit the gas that it shot out some more a decent amount. But when I returned the car was no longer smoking at all.

I checked all the hoses and they're all good and tight. The oil level is right between the first and second holes on the dipstick and was recently changed to the AMSOIL. No smoking from the engine and no CEL. The car drives fine to. No power lag whatsoever. My only mods are the Intake and RH. No aftermarket exhaust.

Any thoughts as to what could have caused this and if I should be concerned??

well seeing that u checked everything that could have crossed my mind i say just stay on top of it for a couple of weekz.........g/l...........

 

im not sure but i heard that bluish smoke/whitish smoke could be the the rings.

 

The stream wasn't continuous. It only lasted for a few seconds and then went away. I just checked the car again right now and no smoke on start up. I'll check it again tomorrow morning.

Great. This is the last thing I need right now.

If the rings are messed up or whatever engine component is associated with this smoke.....is there any reason why the dealer would deny the warranty? Would the intake or RH directly contribute to this problem??

And before somebody asks me....NO I haven't over-revved the engine or mis-shifted.

 

hmm well white smoke is coolant.
the blue is the rings.
or maybe they put a little bit of seafoam in there.

hmm i dont think it would be related, but the fact that you do have an intake and rh would lead them to the suspicion that you raced the car and f**ked it up.

They can't "assume" anything. They have to actually be able to prove it. And I guarantee if they bring up the RPM ranges from the ECU they'll see that I haven't done anything to abuse the car.

well i was just saying, right off the line its gonna be there first thought no matter what. until they read the ecu. and i also didnt say assume.

i dont mean to be a dick or anything

 

So it only happens when the engine is cold yeah? some times rings can stick with carbon and let some oil slip by when cold the when the engine gets some temp the rings and piston expand to take up the small gap. posible top engine cleaner from honda to be used to clean carbon build up from ring grooves.

the honda passport had a bulletin for a similar problem.

Don't worry I know you're not being an ***. But to me "suspicion" implies assumption. And I hate when dealers are quick to jump on the driver being at fault.

Could be. We had a pretty big cold front come through and it's been significantly cooler down here than the usual 100 degree temperatures that have been plaguing us for months. The temp literally did a 180 from 97 degrees one day to low 60s the next few days starting on Sunday.

that tells me that because of the temp change, condensation built up it the exhaust after you shut the car off and let it sit.....upon start up the next time, the condensation started to burn off, and that was smoke you saw.....

completely normal

 

Condensation smoke usually comes out as white. Its the blue smoke that would bother me.

 

what you are seeing is perfectly normal. every car I had burned oil on startup and I'm talking brand new. The pistons expand in the bores and when the engine is cold, the piston to wall clearance is greater than when at operating temp. The extra clearance, allows blow-by gasses and it's especially noticeable when you first hit the gas

 

Jeez I hope so. Those first few posts had me nervous for a while. I asked the master tech at my dealership and he said it was normal to. I was fixing to do a compression check and he said "don't even bother".

ill believe this... my father's car does it. he has a 2003 996 TT w/ about 30k miles on it... every time he starts it up i see blue smoke creep out for about 5 seconds... The porsche techs insisted it was just a small amount of oil that passes the rings due to expansion and contraction. ive checked my car but havent seen it.

now my hatch i used to have did that... it was a b16a2 w/ 30k miles I/IM/RH/E chipped never had any issues sold it at 66k never once had any oil or coolant issues.

 

bro if you want to be totally sure it's not your rings then just do a compression and leakdown test.
That'll let you know the status of your rings.
