Default 1996 Accord EX tranny died?

My cousin's accord tranny stopped responding... engine runs, but when giving it gas while in gear it acts like it's in neutral. It's been having harsh shifting prior to that... does this mean the tranny is dead?
how reliable if a rebuilt tranny? price range for repairs?

Did you bother looking to make sure the axle hadn't popped out or got messed up?

Should note that in the first post then.

From what you described (when it's in gear it acts as though it's in neutral) it could be as simple as an axle popping out of place.

I would start with a tranny fluid change and see if that helps at all - the usual drain and refill x3.

If it does you might be ok, if not then time to snag a tranny. At the price they are I'd just buy a used from like craigslist, I sold mine for ~$100 in excellent shape.

car moves in reverse and not forward = 1 of 2 things

1. trans not engaging forward gear indicating internal failure of some kind
2. shift select cable miss adjusted
