i broke my damn mcgard key (the inside of the key that goes onto the lug nut completely came off) so i need to buy a new one. Before i go to the stealership and get raped i wanted to look online.

are all the mcGard keys the same? or is the acura one a certain one? i need the specs so i can get a new one, anyone know? thanks

its the Star shaped one btw. my question is , is there similiar star shaped ones? or as long as its the one with 5 ends, thats the key for me to buy?

 

my gf had the same problem except her key was stolen, they looked exactly like the oem ones, but weren't so i had to break'em off

A "universal socket" can frequently remove those type of locks.


But yes, each lock is unique. If you still have the lock number, you can call McGard and order a replacement key.

 

actually that universal socket wouldn't work on mcgaurd locks. The outer portion of the lock is round and smooth. there's nothing for that universal socket to latch on to.



try something like this... hammer it on and twist off.

 

McGard has a TON of different combinations, good luck finding a key that fits your lock. They are good for this reason, but horrible for design. If they are over-torqued, they will break everytime.

 

There is a limited number (12? 20? I'm not sure) of different keys that they use. Many dealers have a complete set of keys, so if you take it to a dealer, they should be able to get your lock off so you can use regular lug nuts.

If you sent in the registration card when you bought the set of Honda/McGard wheel locks, you can buy a new key for your set. If you didn't, there's no way to know which key is the one you need.

 

i went to the dealership and they took out a whole set of the locks. they go by colors i guess, but yeah they got my key and ordered for 25 bux

I didn't have much issue getting the little pins inside of the universal socket to grab inside of the lock pattern. I think only 6 or 7 pins actually ended up being engaged, but it was enough to take the lock I was trying to remove off.

But yeah, You'll never get it to grab a smooth cylinder.

And these invalidate all forms of wheel protection that isn't a dog chained to the car, but do destroy the locking lug removing them...
