i used a fine piece of steel whool to clean off som nasty overspray.
now the rim is dull, i'm wondering if buffing it will bring out the shine again...is so what kind compound should i use?

Using steel wool was a mistake. (obviously) A mild solvent and a rag would have been a better choice. Live and learn.

You may want to consider repainting them. Make sure you use clear coat when you're done painting.

 

try the compound on a small area and rub it firm but not too much..... but like what was stated above... the clear coat might be destroyed now.

 

Just wet sand it and reclear.
