Help with tire selection for my DD CRX
I need to get some new tire for my 91 CRX B16. The car is my daily driver and I like to drive hard and I auto-X when I can. Tread life and wet traction is kind of a concern here in S. Florida because when it rains here, it really comes down hard. But I love dry traction as well.
I currently have 15x7 rims with 195-50-15 Goodyear Eagle F1 DS-G3. I am pretty happy with these - pretty good wet or dry - but maybe there are some better tires out there for my needs? Let me know what you think. I have heard some good things about the Hankook Ventus RS-2 Z-212 tires and I like the idea of moving up to a wider 205 tire. (Azenis are the best dry, but wear too quickly for my wallet and don't offer enough wet traction for me.) So any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

I am so disappointed that Goodyear Eagle F1 DS-G3 are no longer made in my size
and to top it off there aren't any comparable tires available.
I am really disappointed that there is a lack of selection in my tire sizes. It seems there are no tires in the "Max Performance" category. I either have to upgrade to "Extreme Performance" or downgrade to "Ultra High Performance" - tirerack
(Each has it's benefits and drawbacks such as quick wear or lower performance)
Just looking for something similar in performance and I need some help.
Thanks

I am currently running Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec, however, I don't use them on the street much, only once in a while. The wet traction is ok, better than the Azenis and I think the tread wear is pretty decent too, and of course, I autox with them also.
They are doing a promote at tirerack now at $86 each plus shipping with a free ipod or $50 rebate.
just my 2cents.

I do not want to downgrade in performance, so I am leaning toward the Hankooks - let me know what you think. Any personal experience or suggestions will help. Maybe there will be some new tires coming out soon? Thanks

The following tires have great reviews, all in order of price increase. Dunlop Z1 Star Specs, Bridgestone RE01R, Toyo R1R. Hankook Rs2's are ok in dry and pretty good in wet. You probably wont find anything better in wet and stickier in try.
car and driver did a test and the G2-D3 ended up on top... 1st place
hankooks rs-2 was in 5th place.

more recently though consumer reports also did another test
where the goodyears ended up in 8th place.

I am just finding out that goodyear discontinued these tires in my size.
That's really disappointing, now I really need some suggestions.

i had the hankooks on my jetta, loved them. also running the dunlop direzzas and very pleased. best tire i've used? bf goodrich g-force t/a kdw. perform as sick as they look. pricey tho!
I would stick with 195/50-15, unless you are using the tires for track events. 205/50 will throw off the accuracy of your speedometer/odometer and will hurt your acceleration.
The Goodyear F1 GS-D3 is a great tire and it's too bad they have become so difficult to find anywhere.
I would not recommend the Hankook Ventus R-S2 Z212 for your needs, since tread life will only be about half of what you get with the F1 GS-D3 (15-20K miles vs 25-40K for the Goodyear) and rain traction is okay but not as good as the Goodyear. Same thing for the Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec, which is a great tire for autocross and dry traction if you don't care about treadlife or rain traction, but you do.
I recommend the Fuzion ZRi ($62/tire in 195/50-15 at the Tire Rack) or the Yokohama S.drive ($64/tire in 195/50-15 at the Tire Rack). Both offer very good dry traction, excellent rain traction, and treadlife similar to the Goodyears. You can see a side-by-side comparison test of both these tires here.
Both the ZRi and S.drive offer much better performance than the above-mentioned BFG g-Force Sport, and are cheaper than the BFG ($76/tire at Tire Rack) and the Toyo T1R ($87/tire at Edge Racing).

It's okay, but not appreciably better than the S.drive or the ZRi - IOW, not good enough to make up for the difference in price.

Did some research on the S-drives and they don't sound that great. Reviews suggest that they will not compare to my current Goodyears and I'm not really looking to downgrade.
Really leaning toward the Hankooks because my rear tires will last a while in such a light car (1800 lbs.) and I would just have to replace the two fronts at a time. At 77$ each it seems like the right choice?

It's true that the S.drive and ZRi won't grip as well on dry pavement as the Goodyear. The Goodyear is an outstanding tire.

If I were in your situation, I would call Goodyear customer service and ask them if they can tell you where you can get the F1 GS-D3 in 195/50-15.
If that doesn't work, then I suppose you could get the Hankook. As with any set of mismatched tires, don't push them hard, especially in the rain, since their handling will be different from the other two tires.

Thanks for the post. I guess I wasn't too clear, but I meant I would get 4 brand new matching hankooks. But since the rear tires will last much longer than the fronts, I would be replacing the fronts more often (2 at a time).

That will work. Another, alternative way of handling that is to rotate the tires on a regular basis, so that they will all wear out at the same time.

Dunlop Direzza DZ101
Ive got almost 20K miles on mine, and still about 20K left. Great "bang for buck" tire. You should be able to get 'em for about 200 for the set.

It's an okay all-season tire - not the best all-season, not the worst. And all-seasons are a terrible choice for anyone in Miami. Why do you need to compromise on warm-weather performance to buy a tire that can handle snow okay? Good summer tires (like the ones recommended above) will give you MUCH better performance in moderate to warm temperatures than the NeoGen or other all-seasons.
