Default TPS...idle problems

Ok, where do I start? I have a 2003 RSX Type S

When I took my foot off the gas a few weeks ago, the idle was reving up and down. My friend, who is a mechanic thought it was the TPS sensor and we ordered one, replaced it...and still had the same problem.

Decided to take it to the Honda dealership to have them put it on the diagnostic....They broke my sensor and said the problem was the TPS sensor...but that you can only replace the throttle body. After getting them to order me a new one, we contacted the company that we bought the sensor from and they said we had to calibrate the sensor.

Ok, we did that and the car is still doing the same thing.

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions???????

I actually had this problem and it turned out to be the actual TPS on the TB. It was because of an accident and something pushed the top of my TPS in a bit and left a mark. IF the dealership broke your TPS, then they are obligated to replace it and if they can order only a whole new TB then they better hop on the ball and replace what they broke. Yes the dealership says you can only buy the TB with the TPS but that is only from the dealership. OMNI makes a TPS you can replace your OEM one with.

BUT....

Have you actually checked your IACV first before jumping to conclusions of thinking it's the TPS? crap builds up in your IACV and can cause that erradic idleing. Your IACV is located under your TB. You don't need to let your IACV sit for a day, maybe 30 mins or so if that because brake cleaner dries up really quick.

Here's a HOW TO from CRSX.

It's pretty basic stuff, nothing difficult. Begin by removing the misc. electronic plugs from the throttle body. Remove the two bolts and two nuts, then pop the throttle body off. Turn it over, and you'll see the IAC valve bolted to the underside of the TB. Remove the screws, then remove the electronic portion of the valve. After it's removed, soak the valve with non-chlorinated brake cleaner and work the valve back and forth to clear the build-up. I'd let it dry for at least a day (might be overkill, but oh well, I've got the garage to leave the car in), then reinstall.

_Underside of the throttle body, with the IAC valve removed:

_IAC valve removed. Notice the electronic portion that should be removed prior to spraying:

_The build-up around the IAC valve:

_Shot with the electronics removed. The valve has a magnetic end:

Yea..sorry, should have made myself more clear...When I started having the issues my friend (the mechanic) hooked my car up to his diagnostic. THe code read the TPS sensor. Acura only sells the TB so we found the TPS sensor from
Omni. When the new sensor didn't work, we thought his diagnostic might not be reading the right code.

Took the car to Honda to put on their machine...they found the same code, have to order the TB. However, while they were looking at it, the idiots broke the sensor. They ordered me another one, my husband put it on and calibrated it (like Omni told us to)....still doing the same thing.

My husband said he cleaned the IACV when he and our friend took apart the TB...looked pretty clean.

check for a vacuum leak as well as looking at the MAP sensor.
