Default How reliable is the sohc D16Y8

I own a 1996 Ex SOHC VTEC Coupe. I regularly push the car hard (completely stock). has anyone ever had any problems with this motor?

It's a very reliable motor (like all Honda motors) and should last a long time as long as you take care of it.

I have a 1997 honda civic ex with that motor, and i have about 52k miles on it??

I usually take it up to redline 2-3 times day, nothing bad so far *knock on wood*

All I have is intake and exhaust, I don't know anything about teir reliability once you start squeezing or boosting.

As long as you keep it near stock you shouldn't have any problems with your motor. It is an excellent motor for reliability.

I have 90k on my 96 Civic Ex, no problems as of yet. Knock on wood.

I have a 98 ex coupe with 109,000 miles. I/H/E milled head and cam. I drive it hard just about everyday (why? because it's still slow as f@#& and I'm always running late)

anyways the motor has held up fine....I am on my 3rd tranny though!

I have a 95 EX, which as you know is a D16Z6 not D16Y8, but close enough...
CAI/H/E and BBK 62mm throttle body w. 170K miles; still purrs like a cat (a freaking little old lady slow azzed cat, but a cat nonetheless )

My 97 EX has been supercharged since May of 98 with 5k on the odometer.. Still same supercharger, still same motor. Now she has about 63,000 on it. I'm boosting about 6 psi on an Automatic Tranny! Figure that one out.. Still hasn't died in 5 years.. I'm confused.

My g/f's 1996 EX has 109,000 on the odo and she still autocrosses it and drives it all over the damn country.. D16's are just as good as any other Honda.

D series motors are very dependable..keep boost down and it ll take u to 200k easily at stock..i think this motor was meant to get 300k

Ive got close to 140k on my d16z6, push it hard every day. My girlfriend has well over 200k miles. Hers is a 92 cx. I want to swap but the car runs so freaking well it be a shame to waste the motor. Dont get me wrong both are slow as **** but reliable as anything on the road

I know 3 or 4 people who have spun rod bearings on that motor. One guy is actually on his 4th one (my old motor after i swapped). But I don't know these guys' maintenance practices...if they kept up on oil changes and oil level between changes. But as long as you keep a keen eye on your oil, i don't see why they shouldn't last

my friend put exactly 225,000 miles on his '92.

decide to go the twincam route, but the engine was still fine and running strong.

just keep up with the maintence and you shouldn't to worry a whole lot.

now granted, anything can go wrong but its up to you if you take care of it, and vise versa

My research has told me that the D16Y8 engine tests put the engine's life at around 300K stock. Following the "Normal" Schedule in the owners manual (i.e. Oil changes every 7,500K, Tranny Fluid at 90K blah blah blah..
