Are the Stant Super Stats ok on quality and performance ???
How do the Honda thermostats compare with the Stant "Super Stats" ? not the Stant Regular stats, but the stainless steel, thicker steel ones, with the V groove technology ?? I called Honda and they said $38.86 -- WHOA. Think I have to try a Stant with crazy prics like that.
No, never heard of HAP, and can't find the FAQ's.
I can get somewhat of a discount thru a friend who has an independent shop but it still seemed like way too much. I saw a pic of the OE stats, I think Denso [makes?] supplies them to Honda, and they do look well built, as if they will last a long time. The Stant Premium ones look good too. I might try one of those for starters until I can find a OE for a reasonable price.
Btw, I had did another post, where I was asking about what the real OE stat temp was. I had been reading up on the subject in the archives and it seems that other people were confused about that issue as well. I think I know what the confusion is about: Helms lists the OE fully open stat temp as 194 F. But other sources say the OE temp is 180 F. Honda does and doesn't tell us the engine temp, meaning that somewhere it is listed as 180 F. So, they are two different subjects. The one temp is for the engine and the other temp for the stat. I always thought that stats went to fully open [194 F vs 180 F], and then stayed there basically, but it is the opposite, they rarely go to fully open, since there is no temp control beyond that point. An engineer from stant recently explained that to me. So, the 180 would be the correct engine temp and the stat keeps the temps it in that window.
Not sure what is in my Honda but it doesn't have a jiggle pin, and from the pics I think the Densos have jiggle pins. When I was reading up on head gasket issues, I read where some techs drill a 1/8" hole into the stat if there is no jiggle pin in it, to protect against an overheat in case the stat got stuck closed ... Hmmm ? But then Stant told me that some stats only look as if they have no jiggle pins, but that there is a small pin hole in them that can be seen if you hold the stat up to the light. At any rate, I would think a small pin hole could clog with rust, etc., easily. I prefer jiggle pins.

diyer, today is your day
Accord FAQ at the top, go to the Sites/Shops at the very bottom, first one listed (it's Honda Automotive Parts) discounted OEM parts, if you can wait the shipping period you can save a ton.
I will see if I can find the correct starting temp as I do not know it off the top of my head.

$40 is crazy? I'm a full time student, and that price still seems very reasonable to me. Did you expect it to be like $5 bucks or something?
Just get the OEM one man.

$5 is a joke, perhaps worldpac gets them for that. But, would you like the sellers info? ... I'm sure they will sell YOU one for $40. Boy, your a parts sellers dream. I'm still shopping around for that Denso stat, $14.83 is the cheapest I can find it locally. Saw some on the net for $18-$19 plus shipping.
I noticed that you didn't come down on the Muffin for saying $40 was too much.

Really. Those $10 savings add up at the end of the year, when you only have about $9k disability to live on yearly. If I didnt do this fix it yourself automotive S__t that life threw at me, I wouldn't be able to drive, and then with the price of gas, it would be even worse. I'm only sorry that I ever bought into that vietnam BS for people like you.
Again, I noticed that you didn't come down on the Muffin for saying $40 was too much. Double standard with board members, huh!?

When a new VSS is $150 from a dealer and it's $20 on ebay, that's worth doing it for. But a thermostat eh not so much of a big deal at $40

Diyer: I was referring to other topic posts. I sincerely believe that gauge needle post issue was not as cut and dried as you made it seem. There can be various reasons for a temp needle to be where it is, and I'm hearing of more reasons than just one reason, i.e., that is normal for Accords. It may be normal most of the time, but not all of the time. And, obviously Hondas are in the minority of vehicles running a gauge needle below the middle -- I've been asking other dealerships and none of them ever heard of that situation for a gauge needle. I do agree that is where the 5th gen Honda Accords gauge needles usually went, but I never agreed that is how they should be, or that it was the norm for other vehicle brands, and if you read that post closer, you might even agree that according to YOU, my Accord might actually be overheating. That is what I meant by in error. Your answers are not looking at all the facts or other possible facts. I think your kinda showing off somewhat and being too quick to answer. But I see that is what always happens on boards where they form cliques and are particular vehicle enthusiasts. Don't get me wrong, I like this board, and I think that eventually I can get correct answers if I am willing to put up with lots of ganging up and ridicule. At any rate, this board is far more forgiving than that POS New England enthusiast board.

You sir, need to talk to either a mechanic, or a REAL engineer. A thermostat opens and closes as the fan cycles in the cooling system. On honda accords (most) the thermostat opens all the way initially at 94 degrees celcious (too lazy to do imperial conversion). Once the thermostat has open fully, the temp in the engine will drop, so the thermostat will close again. From then on, when the temp reaches 90c, it will start to open again to maintain a set engine operating temp, which is much higher then 90c, but the coolant will never be as hot as the engine.
If you want to learn something, you can get a pot of boiling water and a thermometer. Fill a pot with water and throw a thermostat in it. You will see that at room temp, the diaphram will be closed. As the temp inside the pot starts to increase (IE boil) you will see the thermostat open (spring compress).
I could go on and on about lower temp thermostats and fan switchs, and fail safe thermostats, but thats kinda OT.
As for the original question, is $40 too expensive for a t-stat, consider what makes it diffrent from the Honda one, and then weigh the gains of this one over the honda one to determine true value. However, I suggest that you just find the cheapest t-stat you can, as you obviously dont have alot of money if you are getting your panties in a bunch over $40. Also, dont claim to of talked to an engineer, as I am very sure stant has better things to do then let a 250K a year salary engineer shoot the **** over the phone with you on how a t-stat works.

you are missing the point, you seem to want to argue or prove someone wrong even when there is nothing to argue or prove wrong. The problem with your believing someone being wrong is... you aren't open to experiences and only that of hard proven fact when people here give you an answer but you'll believe a complete stranger who claims to be some mechanic but doesn't give any supporting evidence. So why believe them and not people on here?
Don't get me wrong, there is miss information passed around as fact but if you pay attention you can weed through the false statements and get to truth.
The problem is you keep pushing for facts for one side of the argument but won't provide or demand facts from the other side. That is part of what people are seeming to get so upset about.

notice where I said recently? By that I mean recently... as in since the thread about Stop Leak and not to forget the one about overcooling. So no, I'm not going to go through all your posts because I am only referring to your recent ones and if I go and pull out some of your recent posts the "numbers" will support my feelings.
Also, something I just noticed... remember from the stop leak thread where I said your first response set the tone for the thread? If not... you jumped all over someone saying they were rude just for them giving an opinion. In return others jumped on you. While typing this response I get the impression that you like to talk down to people instead of talking to them.

Diyer: I'm sure you could go on and on, but so what, many idiots can and do. I really think you are going into my anti-muffin file system.
[QUOTE=JDM_DC4_Fanatic] As for the original question, is $40 too expensive for a t-stat, consider what makes it diffrent from the Honda one, and then weigh the gains of this one over the honda one to determine true value.
Diyer: I fail to see any connection between price and quality, Why pay $40 when I can get the same denso stat from another dealership for $14?
[QUOTE=JDM_DC4_Fanatic] However, I suggest that you just find the cheapest t-stat you can, as you obviously dont have alot of money if you are getting your panties in a bunch over $40.
Diyer: I'm glad you said that, It just shows what I have been saying about the double standard moderators for this forum. The moderator would never allow me to call you the sissy-punk-*** that you most certainly are. Yeah right $40 but not $14 for the same part. I cant help it you prefer to pay more to make you feel more secure.
Also, dont claim to of talked to an engineer, as I am very sure stant has better things to do then let a 250K a year salary engineer shoot the **** over the phone with you on how a t-stat works.</TD></TR></TABLE>

Oh and he said they [Stant] had been in business for 110 years now, and feel confident they make a quality stat, nor do they mind letting one of their engineers talk to the public if needed -- he he he. He said the thermostat is independent of any parts in the cooling system loop and is designed to maintain the temp that Honda wants the engine to run at, and only reacts to the temp of the coolant ... You sir, need to learn how to probably quote multiple lines before you continue to spew your verbal puss.
Second, you are a total moron from what I can see in your previous posts. You post up something that sounds like a question, wait for replies, then talk about how they are all wrong. So, from which stop leak should I use, to everyones accord has overheated at somepoint, to now stant makes good stuff, but I am going to buy a denso cap cause its $14.
[freak] you, [freak] your opnion, and GET THE [freak] OFF MY INTERNETZ. I really think you need to be banned, as you add nothing useful to the forum, and you havent in the past going through your old posts. I have never said this about anybody before, but you have to be one of the most useless people I have ever had to communicate with on the internet.

Try it. A thermostat opens and closes with temperature. Are you having trouble reaching and maintaining temperature?

Diyer: I read the second sentence in support of the $40 being too high. Does that fit in with seeing the other opposing side aspects of an issue ... People who live in glass houses ....

Not really sure. My question was tied in with the dash temp gauge needle not going to the middle and I thought it was overcooling, but according to the boards authority, Muffinman, the temp guage needle on 5th gen accords only go to about 1/4 up from the bottom when the vehicles are operating normally, i.e., under the white middle mark. So according to the Muffin's logic, and others Accord owners, I might be overheatng, because I am only a hair under the middle white mark.
Edited to change Muffinhead to Muffinman.

You do realize that name calling is going to limit the willingness of people to help.
A typical symptom of a bad thermostat is a temperature variation after the car has reached operating temperature. This usually manifests when coasting in gear (still works for an automatic). A sticking thermostat will result in a temperature drop in that situation. The overall position of the temperature needle is not critical.
Have you verfied the coolant level?

To hear you tell it. But the fact remains, that the stat is controlled independently and totally by the temp of the coolant. and not the fans like you claimed so proudly, as if you were some kind of an authority. AND on that point you stuck your big foot in your big mouth.
As for learning how to quote, I think you got the point enough to reply, but i aint losin any sleep over it.
LETS THROW IT ALL INTO THE TRASH BIN ALONG WITH THE MUFFINS
