99 Accord LX steering wheel jitters or shakes or shimmy's at diffrent speeds need HELP???
I'm looking at buying a 99 honda accord lx with 144k miles on it. Everything checked out on it pretty good except for a shimmy in the steering wheel at diffrent speeds and then it would stop then start again. At first I just thought that the tires might be out of balance. Now i'm not sure. Here is what the car did. Going at 55mph it might shimmy then I would speed up to let's say 70mph then it might stop but sometimes it would continue to shimmy. Then I would go 55 mph and no shimmy then I would go 65 mph with a shimmy then I would slow back down to 55mph and it might shimmy to where it didn't shimmy earlier. Is there something in the steering that would cause this? Like a dampner or a rod of some kind ?Or anything of that sort that might be bad. The guy said when his honda mechanic friend went to look at it with him that he said some $85 part was bad or going bad and that happens with hondas at 100k or so. I have 191k on my 99 accord right now and it doesn't do that. Any help would be appreciated
shimming at different speeds is usually tires in my experience. If it was balance of tires it would be at the same speed. Also it could be tie rod ends, rack & pinion, bushings, ball joints. It really could be several things. Maybe it was in a front end accident and the right part wasn't replaced. does it shimmy when you brake? Let me know.
