Default Metal in VTEC solenoid gasket

Is it normal to find metel flakes in the metel screen. The bottom end was brand new about 3-4 years ago and i know that the gasket hasnt been change since then. So what im asking is do you think it could be from being new and they didnt clean it out very well or form some sort of rod bearing or something?? no clue...

i had this in the b20.

it was coming from the place the original builder tapped into the head for the oil inlet, the dick never cleaned out the flash after tapping..

the screen did its job, and caught it before letting it re-circulate into the engine lol.
my oil pan was debris free and i never got shavings on the magnetic sump plug, only there lol. all sorted now and the oil tapped hole was de-burred/cleaned up by me

Depends.

Usually when I see metal in the screen, it is a spun bearing.

Yep, saw it in a H22 that had VTEC issues, we took off the solenoid and found a good bit of bronze colored metal flakes in the screen. I told the owner that this was a bad thing, but he took off heading home. He never made it, a rod bearing spun and took a dump on him halfway there...

So, it could be be really bad, or it can simply have accumulated over the 3-4 years since the rebuild, or that the block didn't get cleaned properly during the rebuild. You don't hear any knocking sounds from the engine?

no i dont hear any knocking sound. I just found out that the old bottom end slung a rod and most likely it came from them not cleaning the head out properly when they did the rebuild. Thanks guys

you can always crack the caps and check.

BTW what color are the flakes?

well the metal looked silver like aluminum but it was magnetic so im still hoping it came from the old motor when he slung a rod. im going to drain the oil tonight and ill look but it was only coming out of that hole that goes though the wire mess on the vtec solenoid. So who knows??

split the filter. inspect. if its coming to the vtec screen then its going through the filter.

man if theres a bearing problem your going to make it worse. just take the filter off(3bucks) and split it. and see if theres any shavings in it.
