Default New to welding...buying a dynasty 200dx

I spend a lot of time in this forum just checking out everyone's work. I always look at the work and wish I could do that. I just started taking a welding class at my community college and now I want a welder. I went on a few websites to check out prices and I searched for reviews on here for the miller sync 200 which was what I was going for. Last night while going through craigslist I came across a dynasty 200dx with all the accessories including the foot pedal for 2300. It has a little over 6 hours of use and is less than a year old. I am planning to pick it up tomorrow but I wanted to see what you guys think about the price and welder. I mostly like the fact that it is only 45lbs instead of the sync 200 at 240lbs.

that sounds like a hot deal if the machine really only has 6 hours.

you won't regret buying it over the sync200.. it uses less power, runs on multiple voltages, AC balance/frequency control and of course portability.

when you go check out the machine make sure you verify the hours on the machine.

to display arc counter:

flick the power switch on and immediately press and hold both OUTPUT and MAIN/PEAK A buttons simultaneously for 6-7 seconds, the amperage "A" light will blink and will display the arc counter. the first four digits are HOURS and the last two digits are MINUTES.

hope this helps.

Thanks guys. Thats what I thought since brand new I see it for ~3300. Since I am new to welding and dont really plan on making money doing this it I had my doubts thowing down 2300 bucks. The guy selling it said the timer on the machine says 6 hrs and 15 mins but I'll check that for myself. Thanks ROTARY! I'll write down the procedures to get the time. Is there something I can do to make sure it works? I can try welding something but maybe there's a trick to it?

Honestly if you just ran a couple test welds with it on aluminum and steel you should be alright. Especially if it does have low hours on it. Miller (through my LWS) has been great for me as far as service in the past as well, even on machines no longer under warranty.

I can do that! Thanks! I'll be heading out to pick it up shortly. Its a 2.5hr drive but it will be well worth it!

The 200dx is so much better than the syncrowave, right now as a beginner the biggest plus will be size and power consumption, but as you gain skill you will really enjoy the many added features the dynasty offers over the syncrowave. $2300 is a steal.

He has a bottle. He told me to bring a welding mask to test it out so that's what I'm doing. I got your PM! Thanks for pointing that out!

Yup! LOL! He has the Dynasty 350 with the water cooled setup and I asked him if mine could be setup for that as well. He said it could and that he actually has another torch he could throw in for $20 so I jumped on that too!

Oh! and he showed me how to check for the welding time done on it the same way you explained and it showed 000 612 so that is 6hrs and 12mins!

I need some gas which I might pick up tomorrow and weld up the cart. I'm not sure if anyone noticed but I had to cut the bars/hangers off the cart to fit in my trunk, LOL! So thats the first thing I'll be doing!

I wanted to hook it up last night but the machine has a 250v 50a plug. I want to plug it into my dryer outlet which is the 230v plug. Can I just change the plug to a 230v and hook it up? is there anything else to it?

The voltage is fine...however you need to make sure the breakers are rated for what that welder will use as far as amperage. The inverters don't need nearly as much as the older transformer machines, so you SHOULD be fine, but talking to an electrician may be beneficial for you.

That outlet has a 30amp breaker. I will not be using the welder at full power for a while so I think its fine. I was not sure if I could just change the plug end of the welder to go into the dryer outlet and be fine. Thanks!
