2nd new laptop to not run Hondata s300... Lovely...
Sorry, just feel like venting a bit. Not even sure where to put this.
I picked up an Eee pc (ultraportable). The cute little laptop, this one.

In Hondata, not all the parameters boxes are scrollable or re-sizable. So a box that's to big, is to big, and there's no way to see whats on it. As in. The boost control tab. I was unable to scroll to anything past first gear, no matter what I typed in, sized, or dragged around. So, that ain't gonna work. *swell*
Fast forward 2 weeks, I ordered me up a new Dell with the cool racing stripe on it... Just for Hondata. I almost thought it was working. Uploaded a tune, and it's missing stuff. I do some further digging, apparently it's "hit and miss" on Vista.... This revelation happens about 8 hours into it. Just "flaky-ness" all around. Just isn't right.
Great.
It would seem I need to duct tape parts of my old XP machine back together so I have something to use....
I know nobody cares... I just feel better after some typing. It's the night before our big race here... I spent about 10 hours figuring this out, staring at screens and thinking, wtf? I'm not very confident at this point. And I am mentally wiped out.
I'm not so sure that my base tune has been altered to be unusable. Might even be me. I'm still a Hondata software noob. If this is something I did wrong, cut me some slack, I'm exhausted. I might have started working freaked out files in a circle between the machines. Saved and "bammo"... not sure.

I would stay away from Vista. Get a laptop with windows XP. I have zero issues running pretty much any of the engine management systems i tuned with XP. I have had really good luck with my Mac laptop for the last 5-6 months tuning pretty much all major engine management systems, but i am running XP on it.
Like this guy ^ said, make sure you run as administrator! The same thing happened to me with vista and crome pro, the maps were all wacked.
For that price you could have bought a used Thinkpad T60. Too bad.
Seriously though, Vista is the devil. XP works with basicly everything, as everything was designed for it anyways. There is no reason to even have Vista for a tuning-only PC - you're not running DX10 games or connecting to an unsecured wireless connection at Starbucks.
8.9" WSVGA TFT-LCD widescreen display with 1024 x 600 resolution
That's basicly nothing for resolution. You should have done some calculations before even setting out to get a lappy.

I did! I thought to myself, let's get a nice NEW little laptop so I don't ruin my $xx,xxx car because I used my old junker that's had 'who knows what' on it.
And really, who would have thought there would be a window sizing problem with the software?
I'm gonna get with our I.T. guy and see if he can knock this new Dell back to XP.
Time to load the trailer.

Year and half to two years later you'd think somebody at Hondata would have gotten this ironed out.
Mind you, the exact description on the site, which you find AFTER you have troubles, is that Vista MAY not work with Hondata. Not that it won't. Apparently the only way to find out is buy 3-4 laptops and give it a go. ...lol...

Got it working in vista on my friend's laptop.
-Go to device manager, find the S300 unit (should be in unknown devices, or under USB with a yellow exclamation on it)
-right click it, select update drivers,
-go through the advanced section untill you can enter a directory for the drivers (it'll say something like "search this directory")
-click browse, go all the way through to where SManager gets installed by default
(usually c:\program files\Smanager)
-click ok, then search... after it finds the drivers, it'll install them
-click on the SManager shortcut, right click, properties. one of the tabs has the "run as administrator" checkbox. hit that, then OK.
-you should be ok, tried this on 2 vista notebooks with no issues. hth

Most of the new laptops will not run XP. The lack of driver support is the root of the problem. I doubt if you will be able to run XP on a new laptop.
Like others have said, run it as administrator. I've had no problems when I run the program that way.
BTW, it looks like I'll be headed your way (Fort Peck) at the end of Oct. I hope we will have a chance to meet up.

Please do not say new laptops will not run XP. You obviously know nothing about computers.

You were able to make a determination my level of knowledge of computers from one line of a post.
Since your computer skills know no bounds why don't you post the xp disk with the necessary drivers or STFU.
